A man working alone in his field meets two travelers who have been sent out by Jesus. Their stories awaken something in him: the desire to proclaim that the kingdom of God has come near. Inspired by their instructions, he sets out without spare sandals, expecting rejection but hoping that someone will stop, listen, and ask questions as eagerly as he did.
Reality is less dramatic and far more difficult. A sandal breaks. A prayer for healing appears unanswered. At a wedding, everyone is too busy. Elsewhere, grief makes speaking seem inappropriate. One village closes its gate, while the only person who finally listens misunderstands what he is trying to say.
Alone beside a small fire, the would-be messenger wonders whether God wants anyone to hear at all—or whether continuing to try may itself matter. Perhaps faithfulness cannot always be measured by conversions, visible results, or even successful explanations. Perhaps one imperfect encounter, one attempt, and one person hearing something was enough for today.
