A follower traveling with Jesus begins to notice that hospitality cannot be measured merely by an open door, a prepared meal, or a comfortable place to rest. The travelers have not come primarily to be fed. They have come with something to say—and the first duty of a true host is to receive it.
At the home of Martha and Mary, Martha works diligently while Mary sits and listens. In another house, a Pharisee provides the formal setting but withholds the ordinary signs of welcome. Then a woman rejected by everyone else enters and offers Jesus what the recognized host did not: tears instead of water, her hair instead of a cloth, and an overflowing response to his message.
Through these contrasting encounters, the narrator discovers that serving can become a substitute for listening and politeness can conceal refusal. God does not seek impressive houses but truly open ones. Hospitality begins not with what we provide for the guest, but with whether we receive the one who has come.
