S11: E8: Eddie Wineland (UFC, WEC, Firefighter) - Firefighting After Fighting

SHOW SUMMARY:
A lot of people talk about “never forget.” Eddie Wineland actually trains it into his body. Randy Hulsey sits down with the former UFC veteran and WEC bantamweight champion for a real catch-up that turns into a powerful conversation about service, memory, and the kind of discipline that does not need an audience.

We dig into Eddie’s path from long weeks working near the steel mills to nearly two decades with the LaPorte Fire Department, and why that career gave him the freedom and support to compete at the highest level in MMA. Eddie also breaks down his annual 9/11 stair climb tribute: 2,071 steps, done in full firefighting gear with a pack, repeated up and down stadium stairs. He’s honest about what the gear adds, why the heat matters, and why even a brutal workout still cannot match what first responders faced inside the towers.

From there, the talk widens into family and culture. Eddie shares why his kids join the tribute, why “wrestling is not optional,” and what he thinks phones and comfort are doing to toughness and common sense. Because Backstage Pass Radio always keeps music in the mix, we also get into guitars, learning frustration, and how small daily practice builds real progress. We close by circling back to life after Eddie’s June 2022 retirement: commentating, coaching, and why wrestling pressure is such a foundation in modern mixed martial arts.
