Konvo, June 1812

Close your eyes. You hear it before you see it. A low, endless roar, like the sea, except the sea doesn't stamp and whinny and swear in nine languages.

Then the smell hits. Wet wool. Horse sweat. Woodsmoke and black bread and cabbage boiling in a thousand dented kettles. And underneath it all, the sweet rot of green rye ripped out of Lithuanian fields and shoveled into starving animals. Leather. Latrines. Men.

Two hundred thousand of them, jammed into every field, every road, every muddy inch between the city and the Niemen River. Behind them, more. Six hundred thousand in all. The biggest army the Western world has ever produced.

And in the middle of it, in a requisitioned house in a city that never asked for any of this, sits a 42-year-old man who has made kings wait in his antechambers. Napoleon.

The plan is simple. Find the Russians. Break them. Dictate terms. He's done it so many times it no longer feels like a plan. It feels like weather. Like something that just happens when he decides it will.

Six months later, fewer than forty thousand of those men stagger back across that same river. Hollow-eyed. Frostbitten. Barely upright. Their horses, hundreds of thousands of them, lie frozen in the Russian snow.

Not beaten by a better army. Not outfought on some glorious field.

Swallowed by a country that simply refused to play along.

And by a question nobody in Vilna thought to ask. Not one marshal. Not one advisor. Not while the eagles caught the light and six hundred thousand men were sure they were about to write history.

What if we lose?

Two thousand years earlier, a fleet sailed out of Piraeus, cheering, to conquer Sicily. Same certainty. Same silence where the doubt should have been.

Different river. Same trap.
