• Hey everyone! It’s Rossy from Nogata!
• I know I’ve talked about movies quite a bit, but I still haven’t actually made it to a movie theater. Apparently there’s a movie called Sirāt that people have been talking about, but nope—I haven’t seen that one either.
• Coming up first, today, September 24th, I’m hosting another Japanese Conversation Meetup at our usual spot, Nanimo Nai Basho in Koenji. It’s a meetup where we just hang out and chat in Japanese, so if you’re interested, come and join us!
• And next Tuesday, September 29th, I’ll be hosting a stand-up comedy open mic.
• Speaking of stand-up, earlier this month, on Monday, September 14th, I performed at Hiroshi Shimizu’s monthly stand-up comedy open mic in Shimokitazawa.
• I also performed at a comedy show at DEN in Koenji on Wednesday, September 9th. I have to admit, I got a little confused by the whole absurdity of speaking English to a mostly Japanese audience! I still haven’t decided whether I’m going to perform in English again next time or switch back to Japanese.
• There’s also a new place for stand-up: Altica Seven in Yoyogi. I’ve performed there twice so far at an open mic organized by MOTO, and it’s a fantastic venue. I can do material there that I can’t really do at TCB, so next time I’m in Yoyogi, I’m planning to go absolutely wild!
• The other day, a woman I met at a bar in Shimokitazawa told me she was performing in a burlesque show, so I went to AFTER PARTY TOKYO in Shinjuku to see her. It was actually my first time seeing burlesque, and I really enjoyed it. I’d hardly ever even used the word “cabaret” before either, but I have to say, I genuinely found it wonderful to see women expressing and embracing their femininity.
• I’ve completely gotten into watching dating reality shows—or renri-a, as we sometimes call them in Japanese—and recently I watched the second season of the much-talked-about Love Joto. It was really entertaining. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I thought the way the show was put together was really well done. Rather than feeling overly scripted or artificial, it made me feel like, “Yeah, these people probably really would act like this.”
• So anyway, after my Japanese lesson today, I’m heading over to the Japanese Conversation Meetup. Let’s have some fun!

• Hey, everyone! It’s Rossy from Nogata!
• I still haven’t seen Kyu ni Guai ga Waruku Naru (“Suddenly Feeling Unwell”). I have no idea when I’m finally going to see it!
• Speaking of movies, I watched The Village of Eight Gravestones (Yatsuhaka-mura). I don’t usually watch old Japanese movies, but this one was released in 1977, the year I was born. It’s a famous horror mystery based on a novel by Seishi Yokomizo. One interesting thing about this movie is that, unlike in the TV series, Kōsuke Kindaichi is played by Kiyoshi Atsumi. And when you think of Kiyoshi Atsumi, of course, you think of Otoko wa Tsurai yo (It’s Tough Being a Man).
• Tomorrow, Thursday, August 27th, we’re having a Japanese-language open mic at “Nanimonai Basho” in Koenji.
• By the way, I performed at the Shimokita Japanese Open Mic at Gakuya in Shimokitazawa on Monday, August 17th. I’m planning to perform there again next month, on Monday, September 14th.
• It looks like TITAN in Otsuka is still running English-language comedy events. I’d really like to understand English a little better, but apparently the only way to improve is to actually go out there and do it. So I’m thinking about performing there again as well.
• I’ve also started going around to bars and snack bars again. After all, communication is one of the basics of being human. I actually think listening to other people is much harder than talking about yourself. MCs and hosts have to listen to what people say, respond to it, and keep the whole thing moving. So for me, it’s good practice.
• And then there’s recording this podcast. Each episode is about 50 minutes long, and apparently people say it’s difficult to keep talking by yourself for 50 minutes. I don’t think it’s that difficult, though!
• I think the hardest thing is simply to keep going. But at the same time, there’s no need to put too much pressure on ourselves. Let’s just relax, enjoy ourselves, and keep it going.

• Hey everyone! It’s Rossy from Nogata!
• I still haven’t seen Kyū ni Guai ga Waruku Naru (“Suddenly Feeling Unwell”) yet. Sorry!
• On Wednesday, August 12, I took part in a stand-up comedy show at DEN in Koenji, featuring a mix of English and Japanese comedy. For more details, check out the “greeenjacketcomedy” account on Instagram. The Koenji stand-up show organized by Runako will apparently be back again next month, so I’m definitely planning to keep taking part!
• Next up, on Monday, August 17, I’m planning to perform at Hiroshi Shimizu’s stand-up comedy open mic at Gakuya in Shimokitazawa.
• I also had a great time at Taketake-san’s event at “Nanimonai Basho” in Koenji, where we recreated the composition and framing of scenes from movies. It was a really fun event!
• And after that, we’re planning to hold the next Koenji Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic on Thursday, August 27!
• I didn’t perform at TITANS in Otsuka this Thursday. If I’m doing comedy in my hometown of Koenji, I’m probably not going all the way to Otsuka too! 😅 But at DEN, Tomomi-san said that doing comedy in English is really something you just get used to with experience. Apparently, even people who regularly perform comedy in English sometimes come across words they don’t understand. It reminded me that there’s no shortcut—I just have to keep at it, little by little.

• Hey everyone! It’s Rossy from Nogata!
• I watched the Japanese movie Drive My Car. It stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, with Masaki Okada and Reika Kirishima, and was directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
• I also heard that the film All of a Sudden (Kyū ni Guai ga Waruku Naru) won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, so I’m hoping to go see it sometime soon.
• And while we’re on the subject of movies, I finally properly watched Harry Potter for the first time! So Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is actually the first movie in the series. I’d been to Universal Studios Japan twice and had even been on the Harry Potter ride recently, but somehow I’d never actually sat down and watched the movie until now.
• Moto suggested that we hold an open mic at Nanimonai Basho in Koenji on Tuesday, August 4, so we decided to make it happen. Ironically, Moto himself ended up not being able to make it!
• My next stand-up performance will be on Monday, August 10, at an open mic near TCB in Shibuya.
• After that, I’ll be doing English stand-up at Koenji DEN on Wednesday, August 12. It’s been a while since I last performed comedy in English, so I’m a little nervous!
• Then, on Monday, August 17, I’ll be performing at an open mic hosted by Hiroshi Shimizu at Gakuya in Shimokitazawa.
• And finally, on Thursday, August 27, I’m planning to host my own stand-up comedy event at Nanimonai Basho in Koenji!

• Along with my name change, I’ve decided to rename the podcast as well.
• It’s been a while since the last episode, but I still performed at stand-up comedy events in both June and July.
• I’m planning to keep challenging myself with stand-up comedy in August as well, with shows in Koenji and Shimokitazawa.
• Lately I’ve started wondering whether my love of improvisation can really coexist with my admiration for Hikari Ota’s style of comedy and Hitoshi Matsumoto’s style of comedy. It made me question whether those ideas can truly exist side by side.
• Either way, I love comedy. So from now on, I’ve decided to put more effort into writing proper scripts and developing them into well-crafted stand-up routines.
• I’ll continue doing this radio show in an improvised style, because I think both improvisation and scripted performances have their own strengths. At the same time, I’ve realized that I don’t yet have the level of comedic skill needed to consistently get laughs through improvisation alone.

------------------------------------

I’ve done English stand-up in Otsuka four times. Apparently there’s also a show in Kinshicho, but honestly, that’s pretty far, so maybe I’ll try that one someday.

・Oh, and I also held a Japanese stand-up event in Koenji in April!→ In May, I’ll do Japanese stand-up in Shimokitazawa on Monday the 11th, another one on Tuesday the 12th, and then another Japanese stand-up event on Thursday, May 28th.

・Come to think of it, I don’t have any live music shows planned after that… I kind of feel like seeing ska, punk, or metal again. By the way, I watched Hype!, the movie about Seattle grunge rock. I’m not really sure how to describe it, though.

・The Japanese conversation meetup will be held on Tuesday, May 19th.
