Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in around 1818 and rose to become one of America's most prominent figures in the Abolition movement.

But did you know how famous he became in Britain and Ireland, thanks to his successful 1845-7 tour? After Charlie gives us a run down of his origins and escape from slavery, Ellie gives us some insight on the impact African American campaigners like Fred would have had on the British public.

Following from last week's episode on the Peterloo Massacre, Ellie and Charlie follow the events of the day itself, focusing on some of the victims and survivors and discussing how women were disproportionately targeted by soldiers.

What was the aftermath of Peterloo like throughout the country, how did the Government respond and more importantly, what has changed?

WARNING! We will be discussing scenes of violence, listen with care.

Also the historian Ellie recommends at the end of the episode is Joyce Marlow, not Matthews!

With the anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre coming up, Charlie and Ellie take a look at one of the most tragic yet defining moments in British radical history.

In this first of two episodes, we set the scene of an early industrial Manchester to try and understand where working people's anger and frustration was coming from.

Why did 60,000 people show up that day in 1819 and what were they demanding?
