Robert W. Chambers (1865–1933) was an American author best known for The King in Yellow (1895), a collection of interconnected short stories centered on a fictional play that drives readers mad. The first four stories ("The Repairer of Reputations," "The Mask," "In the Court of the Dragon," "The Yellow Sign") are considered his weird fiction masterpieces and were hugely influential on later horror writers, including Lovecraft, who borrowed Chambers' invented mythology (Hastur, Carcosa, the Yellow Sign) into the Cthulhu Mythos.
