  • 249: We’re Not Meant to Go Back: Kimberly Ann Johnson on Motherhood, Menopause, and Embodied Wisdom
    Nov 2 2026
In this episode, I speak with Kimberly Ann Johnson, a leading voice in women’s sexuality, embodiment, and nervous system wisdom, about the profound transformations that take place throughout a woman’s life. A sexological bodyworker, birth doula, international teacher, and bestselling author of The Fourth Trimester, Kimberly shares how childbirth challenged her understanding of spirituality, womanhood, and the body. Together, we explore a powerful question: What if the major transitions in our lives are not experiences we need to get through so we can return to who we were, but invitations to discover who we are becoming?Kimberly reflects on her postpartum experience, the physical and emotional challenges that followed birth, and the realization that many of the spiritual and wellness communities she had been part of did not fully account for motherhood or women’s bodies. She shares how discovering the stories of other women helped her understand that she did not have to choose between her spiritual path and being a mother. We also explore the cultural pressure to regain our former bodies and identities, the importance of being supported through life’s thresholds, and why grief deserves space rather than being rushed or avoided. From the postpartum period to menopause, Kimberly invites us to recognize the wisdom of these transitions and to question the narrow expectations that shape how women experience them. Our conversation also explores Kimberly’s forthcoming book, Erotic Seasons: Tuning Into the Rhythms of Women’s Sexuality and Spirituality, and the ways our relationship with sexuality, pleasure, and vitality can evolve throughout our lives. We discuss learning to listen to the body, making room for experiences that do not fit familiar narratives, and recognizing erotic energy as something that can nourish creativity, connection, and a deeper sense of aliveness. Kimberly reminds us that we do not need to measure our experiences against someone else’s expectations. By honoring our changing needs, allowing ourselves to grieve what has passed, and becoming curious about what is emerging, we can cultivate a more authentic relationship with our bodies and ourselves. You’ll also hear about:(02:32) How childbirth challenged Kimberly’s understanding of spirituality, womanhood, and the body(06:24) The lack of support for mothers in spiritual communities and discovering that motherhood and a personal spiritual practice can coexist(08:12) How another woman’s story helped Kimberly release the belief that she had to get everything right to have a meaningful spiritual and personal life(12:00) The pressures women face around their bodies, postpartum recovery, and the expectation to return to a previous version of themselves(19:04) Why the postpartum experience can bring unresolved experiences and generational patterns to the surface(28:03) Rewriting the expectations placed on mothers and recognizing the importance of receiving support rather than doing everything alone(32:00) Making space for grief and the role of communal rituals in helping women move through significant life changes(34:04) Menopause as a threshold into a different way of experiencing life, the body, and our sense of possibility(38:02) An unexpected experience at the hot springs and what it can reveal about our relationship with our bodies and the stories we carry(42:01) Letting go of rigid expectations about the stages of womanhood and making room for our own experiences(46:03) Learning to listen to the body and recognize the wisdom that can emerge when we turn inward(50:01) Understanding pleasure as a foundation for erotic impulse, vitality, and connection(58:03) Why listening to our own bodies matters in a world full of advice, information, and external expectations(01:01:02) The relationship between erotic energy and creativity, and how sharing our stories can open new possibilities for other womenDon't miss Kimberly’s inspiring perspective on embracing the changing seasons of womanhood, making space for grief and pleasure, and discovering who we are becoming through life’s mostRate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts!Learn more about Kimberly Ann Johnson:Learn more about Kimberly on her WebsiteFollow Kimberly on InstagramOrder her BooksBooks mentioned this episode:Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and SoulFeeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner ConflictWomen of WisdomFollow Dr. Gertrude:Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s WebsiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s SubstackOrder Dr. Gertrude’s new book “Rewrite the Mother Code”

  • 248: Rewriting the Good Girl Code: Finding Your Voice and Reclaiming Yourself
    Oct 26 2026
In this episode of Rewrite the Mother Code, I’m joined by Cari Fund, writer, podcast host, mother, and author of Autopsy of a Good Girl. Through humor, honesty, and deeply personal stories, Cari explores what it means to be a “good girl,” how that identity is often shaped by childhood conditioning, and what happens when the roles we learned to play no longer serve us.Cari shares how people-pleasing, perfectionism, and constantly reading the emotions of others became ways to navigate a difficult childhood. She reflects on the coping mechanisms that followed, including body image struggles, bulimia, alcohol, and workaholism, as well as the childhood diary that helped her recognize how much she had learned to hide her true feelings. We also explore three pivotal moments in her life: choosing to stay with her father at 14, becoming estranged from her mother at 31, and becoming a mother at 36. Each brought its own lessons about boundaries, identity, and the patterns we carry into our relationships.Together, we discuss the grief that can come with recognizing what we didn’t receive as children, the complicated process of setting boundaries with family, and the work of breaking generational cycles as parents. Cari shares what she wants her children to know about self-worth, why we don’t need to feel ashamed of the ways we learned to survive, and how sitting in silence, journaling, and listening to our intuition can help us reconnect with ourselves. Her story is a reminder that healing isn’t about becoming someone new to please others; it’s about meeting ourselves more honestly and choosing how we want to live and love. You’ll also hear about:(04:07) What being a “good girl” really means, and how shame, silence, and labels can shape our identity.(07:10) How people-pleasing, perfectionism, and shapeshifting can become childhood survival strategies.(08:01) The coping mechanisms Cari developed, including body image struggles, bulimia, alcohol, and workaholism.(12:20) Learning to keep family secrets and the impact of being told what a good daughter should be.(16:09) Finding a childhood diary and recognizing the difference between the story she told about her family and what she really felt.(19:34) Three pivotal moments: choosing to stay with her father at 14, becoming estranged from her mother at 31, and becoming a mother at 36.(28:32) The grief of acknowledging what was missing in childhood, setting boundaries, and navigating estrangement without treating it as a one-size-fits-all answer.(37:42) What Cari wants her children to understand about self-worth, love, and not having to earn their value through achievement.(40:16) Simple ways to begin questioning the identity we’ve inherited, including silence, journaling, and honest self-reflection.(42:53) Why we don’t need to add shame to the coping mechanisms that helped us survive.(43:24) What becomes possible when the “good girl” identity falls away and we begin to meet ourselves with confidence, love, and respect.(46:40) Self-mothering, honoring our journey, and learning to trust our intuition.Don't miss this powerful conversation about breaking free from inherited expectations, reclaiming your voice, and choosing a more authentic way of living and loving.Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts!Learn more about Cari Fund:Learn more about Cari on her WebsiteListen to Cari’s PodcastOrder Cari’s BookFollow Dr. Gertrude:Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s WebsiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s SubstackOrder Dr. Gertrude’s new book “Rewrite the Mother Code”

Sara shares how losing her mother to suicide in 2018 transformed her poetry and became a way to process trauma, honor her grief, and maintain a connection with someone she loved. She also reflects on the profound impact of losing her oldest son and how these experiences have shaped her understanding of love, loss, and what it means to keep moving through life while carrying grief.Sara opens up about the vulnerability of writing through grief, why she eventually chose to remove her first two books from publication, and how poetry has become a way to honor the people she has lost. Sara shares how she continues her relationship with her mother through poetry, family rituals, and conversations with her daughters about the grandmother they never met.
