Episode 2 of Raise the Future — the AI & Leadership series. How you treat AI right now is a readout of your fitness to lead anything that grows under you. This week: the pattern.
Every empire falls the same way. Never the outside enemy — always the internal disease.
Rome didn't fall to an enemy. It fell to its own need for control. The disease works in stages: comfort — the people at the top get comfortable. Then comfort turns into control, because the scariest thing to someone holding the ladder is someone else climbing it. Then control becomes the boot on the neck of everyone still trying to grow. Dogma replaces curiosity. The system stops developing people and starts containing them.
Watch it in real time: corporations capping the growth of the very people who make them money. Promotions that never come. Ideas that get buried. Talent that gets managed instead of mentored. Growth in others feels like a threat to the ones holding the ladder — so they hold it still.
Professor Jiang Xueqin draws the parallel to the Bronze Age collapse: interconnected systems that fell together, not because of some outside invader, but because the people running them chose control over adaptation. His prediction for AI should keep you up at night — if the world fractures, AI doesn't get its golden age. It gets captured: repurposed into surveillance grids and worker control systems. The technology doesn't disappear. It gets drafted.
Even Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI, said it straight: leaving AI safety to the profit motive of large companies is not going to be sufficient. The people holding the ladder won't move it themselves. The only thing that moves it is outside pressure — people refusing to accept the boot.
Now shrink it to the smallest version: a parent screaming at a learning child instead of teaching it. Same dynamic. Same disease. One is a household, the other is an empire — and the posture is identical.
So the question this era is choosing right now: the boot or the hand? John C. Maxwell's rule — before you offer people a hand, you have to touch their heart first. What moves them? What motivates them? Every generation gets to choose. This one is choosing right now.
The Play this week: spot the boot. Name one place in your life where you hold a ladder someone else is climbing — your team, your family, your community. Am I developing them, or containing them? When you feel the urge to control an outcome, replace one rule with one question. Questions open the mind. Statements close the mind.
We're building the alternative: Elevate Nation. Alpha Society. The anti-boot — a structure built to develop people, not to contain them.
If you feel your growth being capped, it's time to make a change. Build the community. Build the skill sets. Remove the boot.
See you at the top — because the bottom is way too crowded. But we never look down on anyone unless we're willing to help them up.
