In Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Robert Tressell expresses his deep frustration with the societal injustices of his time. Through a vivid cast of hypocritical Christians, ruthless capitalists, and corrupt politicians, he turns his critical gaze towards the very workers who believe a better life is “not for the likes of them.” The title reflects Tressells portrayal of these laborers as philanthropists, toiling under harsh conditions for meager wages while enriching their employers. At the heart of the story is Frank Owen, a passionate socialist who sees the capitalist system as the root cause of the pervasive poverty surrounding him. Despite his earnest efforts to enlighten his fellow workers, he faces resistance, as their education has conditioned them to doubt their own insights in favor of those deemed superior. The narrative is rich with dialogues and impassioned lectures from Owen, echoing Tressells own experiences and struggles.
