Our goal is to have fun learning science through the lens of science fiction, fantasy, and pop-culture. We will start in one place and let the conversation lead us down the winding scenic road exploring the science in science fiction, separating the facts from the Handwavium. We’ll have a little fun and you’ll learn a few facts you can use to impress your friends at a party or use as a conversation starter to go down your own rabbit holes.

In Episode 88 of the Rabbit Hole of Research, Joe, Nick, and Georgia take the show on the road to Reed’s Local, where Melissa and Luc join them to dig into what we really mean when we call someone “crazy.” Using George Romero’s 1973 cult film The Crazies as a starting point, we explore psychosis, sleep deprivation, and how madness is portrayed in horror, sci-fi, and music, the long history of women being persecuted as “hysterical,” and real-life cases of the mind playing tricks, from contagious laughing, a dancing plague and the how the insanity defense changed over time. And who gets to decide whose reality is real?Reed’s Local Events:3017 W Belmont AveChicago, IL 60618Cycling club, Oct 29 at 5:30, 4 to 8 miles through Avondale, checking out Halloween decorations.Halloween karaoke, Oct 31, with costume contest and cash prize.Jim and Georgia's Touch of Noir 2027 Wall Calendar —12 months of all-original art by Jim and Georgia; orders open now, with mailing expected in SeptemberIt’s Science for WeirdosWant to support the show? • The Mini: Nick vs the AI chef
    Oct 7 2026
In Episode 87: The Mini, Joe and Georgia welcome Nick back, recap the Disability in Horror episode, and add a bit more to the conversation. Joe forgot to mention during the episode one of his favorite characters, Nick Andros from Stephen King’s The Stand (which he reads almost every year). They touch on disability representation lacking and casting controversy across both screen adaptations of The Stand, and highlight MCU characters and actors that do it right. Listener Alex also mentioned stories and characters in fiction that he felt got disability right: Hawkeye, Echo, Barbara Gordon, and the graphic novel Wytches.Science Holes: Nick talks about a plague death in a Russian lab that is being compared to COVID (the crew puts this into context and you shouldn’t panic). Georgia was intrigued by two Instagram Clickbait Reels, one on LED lights and health (Joe gives tips for critically reviewing sensational findings) and the other claiming fake eggs are already in your grocery cart (a little misleading twist of the facts to get clicks). Then Joe opens a can of worms talking about an AI that was trained on “what goes into a burger” and developed something a panel of 101 tasters liked better than a Big Mac (also came up with a tasty bean burger and a sustainable mushroom burger). Nick was not impressed and challenged the AI to a cookoff.Subscribe to the Rabbit Hole of Research newsletter for more updates and awesomeness.Order the Touch of Noir 2027 Wall Calendar by Jim and Georgia—12 months of all-original art by Jim and Georgia; pre-orders open now, with mailing expected in SeptemberWords // Friends with Sara: Replay on YouTubeJump to Joe’s Reading (But you should listen to all the amazing authors)Check out what the RHR crew is creating:Joe:Named by the Guild Literary Complex as one of the 35 Writers to Watch!Red Line: Chicago Horror Stories Anthology featuring a new story by Joe!Joe’s Sci-fi physiological thriller Novel: Will You Still Love Me If I Become Someone Else?Future Events to Hang with the Crew:Podcast Cross-AppearancesJoe on GoIndieNow: 21grams with Joe ComptonThe RHR crew on Ben Tanzer's This podcast will change your life: episode three hundred seventy-nineEvents & Conventions:Joe:Art show Ultrastructure: Science is Fun, with Carol Estes at Promise You Art House in Highland IN, October 10th, 10-3pmFamily Day: Seeing the Invisible World to Build a New One; in conjunction with the fall exhibition: teamLab: Everything Exists in Infinite Continuity, at the Smart Museum of Art In Hyde Park, IL, Nov 14th, 11-3pmArt and Science lecture about Zombies: Dec 10thGeorgia:The inaugural 4th Street Print Fest exhibit at Chesterton Art Center is still up (go check out Georgia’s artwork and a panel with Georgia on Nov 7th). • Disability in Horror
    Sep 30 2026
In Episode 86 of the Rabbit Hole of Research, Joe, Georgia, and Mary (Nick had an emergency) are joined by Bram Stoker-nominated horror-comedy writer Grace Daly to dig into one of horror's oldest and laziest shortcuts: the different body as a signal of danger, evil, or tragedy. From ableist tropes and chronic invisible illness to eugenics, pregnancy horror, and the potential and ethics of gene editing, we explore what storytelling gets right, what it gets wrong and that a different body means danger. And don’t worry, Nick will be back next episode!Where to find Grace Daly:www.GraceDalyAuthor.comOrder The Scald-Crow (Bram Stoker-nominated debut)Grace’s upcoming booksThe Star of Kilnaely (pronounced ‘kill-nay-lee’) -A fantasy/comedy novella set in a fantasy version in of the American Midwest, told in short stories inspired by both American and Irish folk music and tales, The Star of Kilnaely explores the beauty found in local ecology, community, and legends. Perfect for fans of The Princess Bride or Terry Pratchett. You just might find you live closer to Kilnaely, and to magic, than you think. Releasing November 17, 2026.Escapist Fiction (Pre-order Now) -Ostensibly about an alien hivemind that overtakes people’s bodies when they become too involved in the escapist media they are consuming, Escapist Fiction is an adult pick-a-path style novel with increased intensity: not only will you make choices, but you will be asked to solve puzzles, smear food on the pages, decorate paper dolls, stab the book, rip the book in half, and more! Ideal for fans of tabletop role-playing games, Black Mirror, video games like The Stanley Parable and Doki Doki Literature Club, and, of course, the classic Choose Your Own Adventure series.
