In this RSU 101 video, David Pulcini, CFP® explains:
What restricted stock units are
How an RSU vesting schedule works
When RSUs become taxable income
Why vesting—not selling—is usually the first tax event
How the 22% federal withholding rate can leave higher earners owing additional taxes
What changes after the shares officially become yours
For example, if 100 shares vest while the stock is worth $50 per share, that generally creates $5,000 of ordinary income. Your company may withhold shares for taxes, but the amount withheld may not fully cover your eventual tax liability.
This is RSU 101—the first installment in our restricted stock unit series. Next, we’ll examine whether to hold or sell vested shares, company-stock concentration risk, and the mistakes that can quietly cost RSU recipients the most.
