When Jesus says that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few, is he describing a multitude of people waiting to be converted? This reflection proposes a different understanding: the disciples reap by bringing people into a genuine encounter with the kingdom of God. The response to that encounter may be acceptance or rejection.
In Luke 10, the disciples offer peace, accept hospitality, heal the sick, and proclaim that the kingdom has come near. Their responsibility is to represent that kingdom truthfully through corresponding words and actions. They cannot produce another person’s willingness—and Jesus does not require them to remain until everyone accepts their message.
A rejected encounter is therefore not necessarily a failed reaping. Rejection can reveal a person’s response just as acceptance can. At the same time, impressive conversion numbers do not prove that the kingdom was represented faithfully.
The plentiful harvest is not a promise of effortless success. It is an extensive task requiring trustworthy workers. The reaper must establish the encounter but cannot answer it on someone else’s behalf.
