Developed by Bank Indonesia during the Covid pandemic to unify fragmented wallets into one seamless payment system, the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard, QRIS, now has over 56 million users and 38 million merchants. Recording 16% year-on-year growth in Q1 2025, it's Indonesia’s go-to digital payment du jour.
Already accepted in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, QRIS received approval for its plans to expand in Japan. It is also looking to expand to India, China, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia.
