• Rejected by One Community, Embraced by Another: Healing Religious Trauma with Araya Baker
    Oct 20 2026

What happens when the place that was supposed to hold you becomes the place that rejects you?

In this episode of Q-MindBody, Darren talks with therapist Araya Baker about religious trauma, family rejection, and what it takes to heal when faith and family are tangled together. Araya works with queer clients at Equity Counseling Services in Houston, and he brings both clinical insight and his own Pentecostal and Apostolic background to the conversation.

They explore why religious trauma is often a double wound, both relational and existential. They also look at why fundamentalist communities cling to rigid rules, how spiritual perfectionism and performative holiness fuel queer scapegoating, and the red flags of controlling or abusive religious leadership. Araya shares how he reconciles his love of people with his faith, why he isn't anti-religion, and what a healthier, more humane Christianity could look like.

His message to queer Christians and survivors of religious abuse: you may be rejected by one community, but there are other communities waiting to embrace you.

  • From Heartstopper to Fantasy: The Power of Queer Fiction
    Aug 28 2026

Stories can do more than entertain us. Sometimes they give us a place to hide when the real world feels overwhelming. Sometimes they show us who we might become. And sometimes they give us the happy ending we never imagined was possible.

In this episode of Q-MindBody, Darren is joined by queer book creator Brad Somerville of Brad Bought a Book and author Paul Michael Winters for a warm conversation about queer fiction, fantasy, and the importance of seeing LGBTQ+ lives reflected in the stories we tell.

They explore childhood escapism, Heartstopper, Love, Simon, fantasy and allegory, coming-out stories, queer joy, and the growing world of LGBTQ+ books available to young people today. Paul also discusses his new fantasy novel, Embers of Analon, and how fantasy can explore difference, oppression, belonging, intimacy, and found family without making queerness itself the problem.

At its heart, this is a conversation about something beautifully simple: it’s hard to imagine a life for yourself when you’ve never seen that life represented in a story.
