  • Jessica Antolini: A Deadly Confrontation, a Child Witness, and a Life Lost
    Oct 21 2026

What happens when an ordinary night out turns into a tragedy, and a five-year-old child becomes one of the most important witnesses to a violent crime?

This week on Pushing Up Lilies, I'm talking about the heartbreaking case of Jessica Antolini, a 30-year-old woman whose life was taken following a violent confrontation outside a bar in Safety Harbor, Florida.

According to investigators, Jessica's boyfriend, Christopher “Dodge” Smith, arrived at the bar looking for her. After an argument outside, he allegedly shot Jessica and then drove over her with his SUV as he left the scene. Even more disturbing, his five-year-old daughter was reportedly present and witnessed the violence.

Jessica fought for her life in the hospital for two days before passing away from her injuries.

As a forensic nurse and former death investigator, there are several aspects of this case that I want to examine. We'll talk about how investigators evaluate gunshot wounds alongside injuries caused by a vehicle, why hospital records are so important in a death investigation, and how forensic evidence can help reconstruct the events leading to someone's death.

I also want to discuss something that deeply concerns me: the involvement of a young child in such a traumatic event. We'll look at the importance of specialized forensic interviews, protecting child witnesses, and recognizing the emotional impact that witnessing violence can have long after the investigation ends.

And because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we'll talk about intimate partner violence, the warning signs that sometimes go unnoticed, and the role healthcare professionals can play in helping people experiencing abuse.

But before anything else, I want you to know who Jessica was.

She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a woman who cared deeply about people's rights and animal welfare. Her family described her as kind and loving, and her life deserves to be remembered for so much more than the circumstances of her death.

Join me as we examine the evidence, the unanswered questions, and the devastating loss of Jessica Antolini.

Because behind every death investigation is a person whose life mattered.

  • Ashley Flynn Case: A Life Taken, A Family Shattered
    Oct 14 2026

When a murder makes national headlines, we often hear more about the person accused of committing the crime than the person whose life was taken. This week on Pushing Up Lilies, I want to change that.

I'm talking about the murder of 37-year-old Ashley Flynn, a devoted mother of two, former elementary school teacher, and volleyball coach from Tipp City, Ohio. Ashley was a woman of faith who loved her family, her community, and the children whose lives she touched. On February 16, 2026, she was fatally shot while in bed inside the home she shared with her husband and daughters.

Her husband, Caleb Flynn, a former pastor and American Idol contestant, initially told investigators that someone had broken into their home. But as investigators examined the scene, questions began to emerge about the reported forced entry, the removal of security cameras, and the physical evidence surrounding Ashley's death.

As a forensic nurse and former death investigator, I want to take you through some of the details that stood out to me. We'll discuss the autopsy findings, bullet trajectories, blood evidence, digital records, and how investigators reconstructed what happened inside that bedroom, even though the murder weapon was never recovered.

We'll also look at the evidence prosecutors presented concerning Caleb's extramarital affair, the messages that became central to their case, and the trial that resulted in his conviction.

But beyond the investigation and courtroom proceedings, I want us to remember Ashley.

She was a mother whose daughters will grow up without her, a teacher who made a difference, and a woman whose life meant so much more than the circumstances of her death.

Join me as we examine the evidence, the investigation, and the heartbreaking story of Ashley Flynn, because behind every case file is a person with a life, a family, and a story worth telling.

  • Christa Pike: Failed Execution Mystery
    Oct 7 2026

What happens when someone is sentenced to death, the execution goes forward, but the person doesn't die?

This week on Pushing Up Lilies, I'm talking about Christa Pike, who was convicted of the brutal 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, Tennessee. Pike was just 18 years old when the murder occurred, and she has spent roughly three decades on death row.

I want to start by telling you about Colleen, what happened to her, and the evidence that ultimately led to Pike's conviction. As a former death investigator, I look at cases like this through the physical evidence, the injuries, the witness statements, and what those findings tell us about a victim's final moments.

But there's another side to this story that raises some serious medical questions.

On September 30, 2026, Tennessee reportedly attempted to execute Pike using pentobarbital. According to the account discussed in this episode, she survived the procedure and was hospitalized in critical condition. As a nurse, I have a lot of questions about what happened inside that execution chamber.

We'll look at how lethal injection is supposed to work, what could potentially go wrong, and the medical and ethical questions that arise when an execution fails.

This case is disturbing on so many levels, and while the latest developments have brought renewed attention to Christa Pike, I don't want us to forget the young woman whose murder started this entire story.

Join me as we examine the evidence, the medicine, and the unanswered questions surrounding this case.
