  • A Roll of the Dice
    Oct 25 2026
The odds of rolling three consecutive double sixes are 1 in 46,656. In the seventh episode of PiXL Pearls Series 10, Rachel Johnson (PiXL CEO) starts with a dice game between two kings, both called Olaf, both claiming the same island, both agreeing to settle it without bloodshed. What followed was either extraordinary luck, divine intervention or a very suspicious pair of dice. The Norwegian Olaf won. He was later made a saint. The incident was recorded as a miracle. Luck is an uncomfortable topic for leaders. Some refuse to acknowledge it played any part. Others give it all the credit and deny they did anything significant themselves. The research suggests both positions miss something. Drawing on the work of Janice Kaplan, Barnaby Marsh and Jim Collins, this episode makes a practical case for how leaders can think about luck honestly, how some of it can be created through attention and getting off the standard path, why taking responsibility when things go wrong matters more than blaming circumstance, and why believing yourself to be lucky turns out to have a measurable effect on how you lead. Julius Caesar called it when he crossed the Rubicon. The die is cast. But what you do before you roll, and after, is still yours to determine. How lucky do you feel? And when things go wrong, where do you look first? Tune in today. If you enjoyed PiXL Pearls... • The Last Blockbuster
    Oct 11 2026
In 2000, Blockbuster laughed Netflix out of the room. In the sixth episode of PiXL Pearls Series 10, Rachel Johnson (PiXL CEO) takes on the story most people think they know and complicates it. The Netflix origin story is neater in the retelling than it ever was in reality. The late fee, the flash of inspiration, the obvious idea: none of it was quite like that. What it was, was messy, uncertain and made up as they went along. Just like most things worth doing. But behind the brands and the balance sheets are people trying to work things out in real time. And some of what they learned along the way translates directly into school leadership. Marc Randolph's caution about title inflation, hiring job titles instead of people who can do the job. The evidence that meaningful work outlasts any perk or incentive a school could offer. And the Netflix principle that sits at the heart of their culture: treat people like adults, give them direction, and trust them to find the way. The Last Blockbuster is still open in Bend, Oregon. It sells merchandise to tourists. It is a museum to the cost of standing still. How much do you love your job and how much do you love the title? And are you treating the adults around you like adults? Tune in today. If you enjoyed PiXL Pearls... • Albatrosse
    Sep 27 2026
A single poem, published in 1798, changed the reputation of an entire species. In the fifth episode of PiXL Pearls Series 10, Rachel Johnson (PiXL CEO) starts with the albatross, a bird that was once considered a symbol of luck and protection by sailors, that became, thanks to Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a byword for burden, guilt and inescapable consequence. A reputation shift that has lasted over two centuries. The episode uses that story as a way into one of the harder conversations in leadership: what do you do when your organisation's reputation is working against you? Or when the reputation people have of you as a leader doesn't match who you are? Drawing on three practical principles, facing reputation head on rather than hoping it resolves itself, doing the work to actually fix what's broken, and actively building the narrative of change, this episode offers a clear-eyed look at what reputation management actually requires from a leader. Because repackaging is not the same as fixing. And if the problems stay, so does the reputation. What is your reputation out there, and what do you believe the truth is in here? What's the gap between the two? Tune in today. If you enjoyed PiXL Pearls...
