Carson Bruns' lab at the University of Colorado Boulder has published PhotoTat, a multicolor tattoo ink built from photochromic dyes encapsulated in PMMA nanoparticles, in Cell Press's Matter & Light. The pigments activate in 2 to 3 seconds under 365 nm UV and are erased in seconds by sunlight, with switchability retained for 1.4 to 2.2 years in skin. No regulatory framework assesses a photoswitchable intradermal pigment before it reaches a studio.
