He is most well known for being the son of Abraham and the father of Jacob. Some commentators have referred to him as a mediocre son of a great father and a mediocre father of a great son. I think this is unfair to Isaac. I believe he admirably fulfilled his place in history.  He was not born to be an Abraham nor was he born to be a Jacob. He was just Isaac.

I was twelve years old and it was the opening day of deer season. It was still dark. The sun would not even think about rising for another thirty minutes. I climbed into the deer stand as Daddy’s flashlight illuminated the boards nailed into the tree. He watched as I got settled in then handed my new Winchester 30-30 up to me. Before he walked to his stand he asked me, are you scared?  I said no, I’m alright. But I lied.

My front yard is covered with leaves. This is not unusual. It was covered with leaves this time last year and the year before. As long as there have been trees, in March the leaves begin to appear and in October they begin to fall. This is truth. It is truth because it is true. You can say that it is not true and that the leaves will not fall in October, but that would not be truth it would be a lie.

When I was about twelve years old, a Godly man named Jack McVeigh, became pastor of Falling Creek BC. Brother Jack was one of those old-fashioned pastors, who proved his love of God, by loving the people of his community.  Jack was a visiting preacher. It was not unusual to see his car driving through the neighborhood as he went from door to door sharing Jesus and inviting people to church. One day he stopped at our house, and the next Sunday we went to church. And we continued to go every Sunday.

Mankind was created in His image. Apart from Him, we are nothing but a handful of dirt. We see because His light shines. We hear because His voice speaks. We understand because fear of Him brings wisdom.  Be assured of this. We breathe air at His discretion. He is God. We are not. He is sovereign and He is untamable. 

Jesus is right here. He has power over death, hell, and the grave and is victorious over modern demons like drugs and alcohol. In John chapter 6, we hear Him say “ I tell you this, and you can be sure of it. If you believe in Me you will have everlasting life.”  He has shown us that he can bring hungry little girls back from the dead and call a friend out of the grave.  Life is but a vapor and death is but a shadow. Put your faith in Jesus and the fear of death will be gone like last week.

Wow. God is the Great Creator of all things. He is the Grand Architect of an ever-expanding universe. He is The Master and Maker of all living things. He counts the stars in the sky and knows them by name. It is God who holds all authority and nothing is done without His permission. He holds the hearts of all of the rulers of this world in His hands. Those rulers don’t have time for me, but God does. He is my Father in Heaven and He loves to spend time with me.
