A Biblical Mindset for Church Finances Joy Suzanne: So in this episode, we're going to debunk several church money myths. I'm excited for this episode because I know for me, even growing up or growing up in ministry too, that I've heard some of these things and [00:01:00] they really can impede our discipleship in terms of finances, but also impede the growth and the health of our church. So we want to make sure that our mindset is a biblical one that we're following in line with what God wants for us. Scripture tells us to be transformed by renewing our minds. Sometimes that means fresh information or clearing out information that isn't as accurate as maybe we thought it was, or just that we hadn't really thought about. So here are some of those money myths that we hear in the church. Money Myth #1: Money is Evil: So the first church money myth is this idea that money is evil or rich people are evil. Well, the truth is money itself is not evil. First Timothy 6:10 says it's the love of money that leads to wrongdoing. The love of money, not money itself. There's this great illustration that I remember from taking Financial Peace University, where it talks about a brick. The brick can [00:02:00] be used to build a house or a hospital, right? But a brick can also be used to crash through a window. The brick isn't good or evil, it's amoral. The brick doesn't have morals. And money is the same way. Money does not have morals either way, but how it is used can be good or it can be evil. And it's really a reflection of the person using it. Somebody who's grumpy with a little bit of money is going to be grumpy with a lot of money, but they're going to be more grumpy, right? It's just going to magnify whatever we are.

Williams & Vanessa Williams Joy Suzanne: My guests on the Pastors & Money Podcast today are Reverend Mark T. Williams and his lovely wife, Vanessa. Reverend Mark T. Williams has been serving actively in ministry since 1978. He graduated from [00:01:00] Rhema Bible Training Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1984, and then became pastor of the House of Refuge Church the following year. He and his wife have been married since 1979. They serve side by side in the ministry at the House of Refuge and in other churches as they teach and preach and do healing ministry as well. And what I love is that God has just opened doors for them to be able to minister, not just in the Greater Rockford, Illinois area, but also around the country and around the world. That's included assisting other pastors and churches and helping to develop leaders, churches and volunteers. Currently, Reverend Williams oversees the Banner of Truth International and Banner of Truth Family Church. Their goal is to reproduce mighty churches for the glory of God. I love that: mighty churches. That's so fun. So welcome to the podcast, Mark and Vanessa. Mark T. Williams: Thank you, Joy. We never do ministry in isolation; our families are part of every step. Joy Suzanne: So glad to have both of you guys here with us today because we [00:02:00] never do ministry in isolation. It's not like any other job where you go to that job and then you come home and your family has nothing to do with it. Our families are all in it together. And so I'm really looking forward to having both of you contribute to this conversation today. So getting started, if you can just tell me a little about your current ministry role and how you got started in ministry. Mark T. Williams: Sure. My current ministry role is that of a general overseer for Banner of Truth International, and mentor, coach for the pastor of Banner of Truth Family Church and visionary leader for the birthing of daughter churches which most likely will also be called Banner of Truth Family Church. Joy Suzanne: Can you tell us a little bit about what your role looks like on a day to day or a ...

Mark has served in pastoral ministry since 2006, working in various ministry roles, including children's and youth ministry, coordinating Financial Peace University classes, as well as serving as a lead pastor. [00:01:00] He currently serves as the Deacon of Finance for Covenant Fellowship Church in Bristol, Virginia, where he operates in a CFO-type role for the church. Mark is also a Ramsey Preferred Financial Coach, and he works with both individuals and churches through his practice Courage to Conquer Coaching. Mark developed the Vision First concept for church budgeting in 2023 and implemented it at Covenant Fellowship Church. He is now working with other pastors and leaders to implement this program in their churches. In the business world, Mike Michalowicz has written a very influential book called Profit First, which provides a practical framework to help businesses go from starving to profitable through their budgeting. Mark and I have both been inspired by the Profit First framework, but Mark took it a step further and started thinking about how these principles would work in churches and ministries. After all, we're not trying to make a profit, not a financial one at least. But we are trying to make a profit, right? We're trying to produce fruit, to go and make disciples, and to participate in [00:02:00] the mission God has given our individual churches and organizations. So how can we steward our finances to accomplish the great tasks that God has put before us? How should churches structure their budgets in order to propel forward the vision God has given them? This is the question Mark Karwowski has been working on, and the result has been this new framework, Vision First. And today we're going to hear a little bit about that as well as how it's been working out in Covenant Fellowship Church in the past year. Interview with Mark Karwowski Mark, welcome to the Pastors and Money Podcast. Mark Karwowski: Thank you. It's great to be here. Joy Suzanne: So Mark, I know you have an engineering background, but you're a pastor, you're a financial coach. So can you tell us a little bit about how you got started with pastoral ...
