  • Who Is the Sovereign Woman?
    Oct 30 2026

What if the greatest gift a woman could give herself and future generations is to stop fighting her body and begin living in harmony with it?

In this episode of Potentiality, I welcome Laurie Rock, holistic weight loss and vitality expert, registered nurse, former healthcare executive, and founder of Ageless Thriving Woman™. Her personal transformation challenges conventional approaches to women's health, weight loss, and aging.

After 30 years in healthcare, Laurie found herself 65 pounds heavier, exhausted, and frustrated by approaches that failed to produce lasting results. Despite her medical knowledge, she struggled with the same cycles of restriction, willpower, and self criticism experienced by countless women.

Her turning point came when she explored nervous system regulation, hormonal health, and the beliefs shaping her choices. Today, at 57, Laurie describes having more energy than she did at 37.

We explore why accomplished women struggle to care for themselves despite knowing what to do. We examine expectations that put women last, the limits of restriction, and the importance of self compassion.

Laurie introduces her philosophy of cell to soul health, explaining why lasting transformation begins with awareness, nervous system regulation, and a shift in how we relate to ourselves. She also shares a simple breathing practice and questions that can help us respond to our needs with greater intention.

We discuss the hormonal transitions of midlife and the possibility of approaching menopause and aging as a period of wisdom, freedom, and personal empowerment rather than inevitable decline.

At the heart of our conversation is a question that extends beyond women's health: What are children learning from the way their mothers treat themselves?

Laurie explores how a mother's relationship with her body, food, and self worth can shape family life.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why Traditional Dieting and Willpower Often Fail to Create Lasting Change

    • How Nervous System Regulation Relates to Food and Emotional Well Being

    • Why Self Awareness and Self Compassion Support Sustainable Change

    • How to Move From Knowing What to Do to Changing Daily Habits

    • A Simple Breathing Practice to Reconnect With Your Body

    • Why Menopause Can Be Reimagined as a Transition Into Wisdom

    • How Cultural Expectations Shape Women's Relationships With Their Bodies

    • Why Community and Supportive Relationships Matter

    • How Mothers Model Body Image, Self Worth, and Emotional Regulation

    • Why Personal Healing Can Influence Future Generations

One of the most meaningful moments in our conversation is Laurie's invitation to replace "What's wrong with me?"with two different questions: "What do I really need?" and "What would love do?"

They invite us to move beyond judgment toward awareness, compassion, and trust.

Ultimately, this conversation is about more than weight loss or vitality. It is about reclaiming the freedom to live fully and recognizing how our relationship with ourselves influences those around us.

When a woman heals, the women around her heal, and the generations after her rise.

  • How Real-World Exposure Transforms Student Identity
    Oct 26 2026

What if, instead of asking young people what they want to do with their lives, we first helped them discover who they are and what they want to contribute to the world?

In this episode of Potentiality, I welcome Dr. Narine Makijan, counselor, educator, author, and Assistant Vice President and Chair of the Los Angeles Regional Consortium (LARC), where she helps connect education and workforce opportunities across 19 community colleges in Los Angeles County. She is also a professor at the USC Rossier School of Education.

Born in Iran to an Armenian family, Narineh immigrated to the United States and became a first-generation college graduate. Her experiences navigating systems not always designed for students like her shaped a career devoted to expanding opportunity and a conviction that education should help young people discover their purpose, not simply prepare them for a job.

Together, we explore how purpose emerges through experience: encountering unfamiliar possibilities, working alongside mentors, trying new roles, making mistakes, and discovering where abilities, interests, values, and contributions intersect. Drawing on Swiss and German apprenticeship models, Dr. Makijan envisions education where real-world learning is integral, pathways remain flexible, and students demonstrate mastery rather than simply accumulate seat time.

We examine barriers that keep capable students from accessing opportunity. Narineh asks not only whether young people are ready for college and work, but whether our institutions are ready for them. Her work connects counseling, colleges, employers, and communities to make meaningful opportunities the norm rather than a matter of luck.

Our conversation also asks: What does it mean to become fully human in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence? Drawing on Beyond the Algorithm, Dr. Makijan argues that technology should deepen human connection, not replace it. Through Sophia's Garden of Virtues, coauthored with her daughter, she reminds us that kindness, integrity, courage, and compassion matter as much as credentials or achievement.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why purpose must come before career decisions
    • How real-world experiences help young people discover who they are
    • Why apprenticeships, mentorship, and meaningful failure matter
    • How flexible pathways open doors without locking students into one future
    • Why access and ability must never be confused
    • How to move from isolated programs to systemic opportunity
    • Why demonstrated mastery matters more than seat time alone
    • How parents can support teens who seem directionless or disengaged
    • What human-centered AI means for education and counseling
    • Why character, virtue, and contribution belong at the heart of success

One essential reminder here: a young person who appears unmotivated may simply not have encountered something meaningful yet. Direction often emerges through exploration, not pressure.

This is a conversation about education worthy of young people's potential, helping them find not just a way to make a living, but a meaningful way to live.

  • How to Build a School of Wholeness
    Oct 23 2026

What if the greatest transformation in education begins not with changing what we teach, but with reimagining the environments in which children grow, learn, and discover who they are?

In this episode of Potentiality, I welcome Dr. Traci Korhonen, an educator, school founder, and visionary who has spent 25 years challenging conventional approaches to education and creating learning environments that honor the whole child.

As the founder of Dream Academe and the driving force behind Mile Away Partnership Chartered Public School in New Hampshire, Traci is building a model that brings together Reggio-inspired education, nature, nutrition, flexible learning, and meaningful partnerships between parents and teachers.

Having met during our doctoral studies at USC more than a decade ago, we reconnect to explore the philosophy behind her work and the personal journey that has shaped her vision.

Traci shares how her early experiences in Reggio-inspired classrooms transformed her understanding of childhood. Rather than directing every moment of learning, she discovered the power of observing children's curiosity, honoring their developmental rhythms, and creating environments where exploration and wonder guide meaningful learning.

We examine the pressures of increasingly academic early childhood education and the importance of protecting childhood from expectations that may overlook children's developmental needs.

Our conversation explores the relationship between physical well-being and learning, including Traci's interest in functional medicine, nutrition, and the conditions that support children's capacity to engage. We discuss why the learning environment itself can become a teacher and how schools can create a stronger connection between home and classroom.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why Protecting Childhood Must Be Central to Educational Design

    • How Reggio-Inspired Education Honors Curiosity and Wonder

    • The Difference Between Schooling and Meaningful Learning

    • Why the Physical Environment Is Considered the Third Teacher

    • How Nutrition and Physical Well-Being Relate to Learning

    • Why Parent-Teacher Partnerships Matter Beyond Academic Achievement

    • How Flexible, Place-Based Learning Can Serve Diverse Family Needs

    • What It Takes to Build Innovative Schools Within Public Education

    • Why Shared Vision and Trust Are Essential to Educational Leadership

    • How Parenting Deepens Our Understanding of Children's Needs

    • Why Apologizing and Modeling Growth Matter for Parents and Educators

    • How Families Can Explore Alternatives When Traditional Schooling Is Not the Right Fit

One of the most meaningful threads in our conversation is the recognition that children should not have to surrender their natural ways of being in order to succeed in school.

Their curiosity, imagination, relationships, physical needs, and individual developmental journeys are not distractions from education. They are essential parts of it.

This conversation invites us to imagine what becomes possible when schools are designed around children's humanity rather than expecting children to adapt to systems that may not fully serve them.

What might the next generation become if every child had the opportunity to grow in an environment that truly honors their wholeness?
