This episode of Our Freedom’s Edge steps away from our usual path to celebrate a remarkable young woman from the small borough of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.

Kinnley Weiser is a junior at Selinsgrove Area High School — and the kicker for the Seals varsity football team.

She may simply see herself as a kid playing the sport she loves, but there is something bigger happening every time she walks onto that field. Kinnley is growing up with opportunities generations of women before her had to fight to make possible — and by simply showing up, doing the work, and taking her place on the team, she is helping move those possibilities forward for the girls who will come after her.

For those of us who remember when many of those doors were still firmly closed, watching a young woman like Kinnley walk through them means more than she may ever realize.

This episode is for Kinnley, for the girls following behind her — and for every generation that helped make that field a little wider.

And to all the Selinsgrove Seals fans out there, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating Kinnley and the history she’s quietly making.
