Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 12 and Proverbs 18:17–20. The reflection follows Samuel’s farewell address as Israel’s leader, where he invites anyone to accuse him of wrongdoing, but no one does; then he recounts God’s faithfulness in rescuing Israel from Egypt and its enemies, calling their demand for a king rebellion against the Lord. Samuel calls down thunder and rain during the wheat harvest as a sign, and the frightened people ask him to pray for them. He assures them God won’t abandon his people, commits to keep praying for and teaching them, and urges continued faithfulness, setting obedience and its blessing against rebellion and its judgment.
Proverbs 18:17–20 moves through several short lessons on speech and relationships. The first account in a dispute can sound convincing until it’s examined, reminding us why honesty matters when making a case. Casting lots illustrates God’s sovereignty over outcomes, and a wronged brother is described as hard to reach as a fortified city, with reconciliation requiring real humility and time. The passage closes by saying words can bring either satisfaction or harm, encouraging speech that honors God and builds others up.
