We have all lain awake rehearsing a conversation that has not happened yet. This episode is for those moments, when preparing for something difficult has slipped into living through it early.
It begins with a founder I was mentoring, who could not sleep before a difficult conversation, and with my own habit of turning a polite request into a cross-examination in my head. It goes on to Ant Middleton’s idea of the Fear Bubble, Robert Sapolsky’s zebra, and Seneca’s remark, nearly two thousand years old, that we suffer more often in imagination than in reality. And it follows one middle-aged man’s decision to test the idea by jumping off a 300-foot crane.
Along the way it asks what is different between preparing for something and living through it early, why the two feel so alike from the inside, and whether I have managed to stop. (I haven’t.)
Follow the story: the jump is told in full in A Study in Fear.
