  • The OT definition that every therapist should hear again
    Oct 20 2026

In this episode of OT Conversations, we go back to one of the older, richer definitions of occupational therapy: OT as the art and science of directing a person’s participation in selected tasks.

It sounds old-fashioned at first, but hidden inside that definition is almost everything we still fight to explain today: activity as treatment, participation as therapy, performance as more than movement, and occupation as the route back to self, health, role, and life.

This is a reflective episode on what OT really does — not just helping people complete tasks, but helping people restore, reinforce, enhance, adapt, and master life again.

  • Muscle Contraction: The Tiny Tug-of-War That Moves the Body
    Oct 6 2026

Every movement starts with a signal.

In this episode, we unpack how muscles contract — from nerve impulse to acetylcholine, calcium, ATP, actin, myosin, and the sliding filament theory. More importantly, we ask what this means clinically: why weakness is not just weakness, and why movement only matters when the person can use it for real function.

  • When OT abandoned the definition of the profession to a slogan
    Oct 13 2026

In this episode of OT Conversations, we go straight into the definition of occupational therapy — the old one, the new one, and the uncomfortable question in between: have we made OT easier to explain but harder to defend?

The current global definition talks about health, wellbeing, participation, and meaningful occupation. It is clean, modern, inclusive, and public-friendly. But does it actually tell people what occupational therapists do?

Hao revisits the older AOTA definition — the one that called OT “the art and science” of directing participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance — and asks whether we have lost something vital: the performance language, the therapeutic mechanism, the adaptation spine, and the professional boundary that once made OT distinct.

This is not just a theory episode. This is about scope, identity, encroachment, and why occupational therapy must not forget that occupation is not just something we support — it is something we use therapeutically.

  • Let us explore neuro plasticity
    Sep 29 2026

What really is neuroplasticity? In this episode of OT Conversations, we unpack the different theories behind how the nervous system changes, learns, adapts, compensates, and sometimes even reinforces the wrong patterns. From Hebbian theory and use-dependent plasticity to motor learning, maladaptive plasticity, enriched environments, and meaningful occupation, this is a grounded talk on what these ideas actually mean in rehabilitation. Less textbook fog, more clinical sense. If you work in therapy, neuro rehab, stroke, or simply want to understand how change happens in the nervous system, this one is for you.

  • Reflexes: first talk for the worthy ones
    Sep 22 2026

    What are reflexes, really?

In this episode, I break reflexes down in a practical and usable way — from normal and primitive reflexes to pathological and postural reactions, and why they matter in stroke, critical care, rehab, and everyday clinical practice.

If you have ever looked at a patient and thought, why is the body doing that, this episode is for you.

  • Radiotherapy and Occupational Therapy
    Sep 15 2026

Radiotherapy sounds technical, but at its core, it is simple: targeted energy used to treat disease. In this episode, we break down what radiotherapy actually is, how it works, the different types, and where proton therapy fits in. We talk through external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, systemic radiotherapy, fractions, side effects, and why this is not just about tumours, but also about function, daily life, and rehabilitation. A grounded OT-style discussion that makes radiotherapy easier to understand without losing the clinical depth.

  • OT, Money, and Meaning: A Hard Look at Our Professional Value
    Sep 8 2026

In this episode of Occupational Therapy Conversations, I step back and look at occupational therapy not just as a caring profession, but as a trade. I talk about the core process of OT practice — assessment, treatment planning, intervention, and discharge — and why understanding this matters, especially for therapists working in the NHS. I reflect on how being salaried within a large public system can sometimes disconnect therapists from the commercial value of what they actually do. This episode is a call for occupational therapists to recognise their professional worth, understand that their work produces measurable outcomes, and become better at explaining, promoting, and standing by the value of their practice.

  • Gender Service and OT
    Sep 1 2026

In this episode of Occupational Therapy Conversations, I reflect on gender service as a developing specialist area and ask a difficult but important question: which profession is actually best placed to hold key parts of this work? I explore the shift from a centralised, medically led model toward a more regional and holistic approach, and I argue that occupational therapy has a far stronger place in this space than many people realise. From identity, roles, habits, values, self-management, and health maintenance, this conversation looks at why OT should not stay quiet while other professions plant their flag. A reflective, provocative RIOT-style episode on professional territory, specialist services, and speaking up for what OT can truly offer.
