  • Beyond the Postcard: What American Travelers Miss in Morocco Part 2
    Oct 14 2026
Send us Fan MailBeyond the Postcard: What American Travelers Miss in MoroccoMorocco looks incredible on a postcard—and it is. The rooftop views of Marrakech, colorful souks, ancient medinas, Atlas Mountain landscapes, and Sahara sunsets are all real. But what happens when you actually arrive? In this episode of The Unfiltered Tourist, Alexa sits down with Sam, a Morocco travel specialist who knows the country from the ground up, to talk about the side of Morocco that often gets left out of travel videos and glossy brochures. For American travelers especially, Morocco can come with a few surprises. Not because Morocco is difficult to visit, but because it doesn't always operate according to the expectations many travelers bring from home. From riads without the hotel-style infrastructure you might expect, to cash payments, medina logistics, long mountain drives, public bathrooms, tipping, dress etiquette, dietary restrictions, and preparing for time in the Sahara, this conversation explores the practical realities that can make your trip smoother—and much more enjoyable. The goal isn't to discourage you from visiting Morocco. Quite the opposite. Understanding these differences before you arrive can help you travel with greater confidence, patience, and curiosity. What American Travelers Should Know Before Visiting Morocco1. Morocco Isn't a Resort VacationOne of the biggest misunderstandings is expecting Morocco to operate like a resort destination in the Caribbean or a luxury vacation in the French Riviera.Morocco has beautiful luxury hotels, exceptional riads, private villas, desert camps, and world-class experiences. But many of these properties exist alongside centuries-old neighborhoods, traditional architecture, narrow streets, local markets, and communities that continue to live much as they have for generations.A beautifully restored riad in the middle of an ancient medina isn't necessarily going to function like a modern American hotel. That's part of the experience.Sam explains why travelers should understand Morocco as a living culture rather than simply a luxury backdrop.2. Air Conditioning Isn't Always the Same StoryWhat happens when you stay in a traditional riad during the summer?Travelers sometimes wonder why a centuries-old building doesn't have the same climate-control system they would expect at home. The answer is partly architectural. Traditional Moroccan buildings were designed around thick walls, shaded spaces, small exterior openings, and central courtyards. These features helped regulate temperatures long before modern air conditioning existed. In remote areas, particularly around the desert, infrastructure can also be very different from what travelers experience in major American cities.Understanding the architecture and environment helps explain why some accommodations feel different—and why choosing the right accommodation for your expectations is important.3. Bring Cash—Especially Small BillsMorocco is increasingly modern when it comes to cards and digital payments, but travelers should not assume they can pay for everything electronically.Hotels, larger restaurants, modern shops, and many established businesses may accept cards. But taxis, small cafés, local vendors, tips, markets, roadside stops, and many smaller businesses often operate with cash. And there is an important detail: carry small denominations of Moroccan dirhams.Trying to pay for a small purchase with a very large banknote can create an awkward situation if the seller doesn't have enough change.A little preparation goes a long way.4. Your Riad May Not Be Accessible by CarThis is one of those things that looks romantic in photographs but can be surprising when you arrive with luggage. Many traditional riads are located inside historic medinas where cars cannot enter—or simply cannot fit through the narrow streets.Your vehicle may drop you near a gate, after which you walk through the medina to your accommodation. For travelers arriving with several large suitcases, this can be considerably more challenging than expected.Knowing this in advance means you can pack more intelligently, arrange assistance with your accommodation, and avoid turning your first arrival into a stressful experience.5. Rural Morocco Requires More PlanningThe further you travel from major cities, the more important preparation becomes.Families traveling with young children may need to organize appropriate car seats in advance. Travelers with serious allergies or strict dietary requirements need to communicate their needs clearly and plan ahead. The same applies to personal supplies. If you're heading into the Sahara and have a particular snack, medication, baby product, toiletries, or other personal item you rely on, don't assume you'll be able to find exactly what you need at a remote desert camp.Stock up before leaving the major cities. The lesson is simple: the further you travel from urban centers, the more self-sufficient you should be...

  • 10 Idées Reçues sur le Voyage au Maroc : Mythes et Réalités
    Sep 28 2026

  • 10 Common Misconceptions about Traveling to Morocco?
    Sep 24 2026
Send us Fan Mail Okay, so I will review with you 10 questions that, , people have about Morocco. Uh, and yeah, feel free to add, uh, any details that our listener could really feel very valuable. So the first question that comes, uh, many times also, uh, considering a political event around the world or geopolitical questions. Is Morocco a safe destination for tourists? Absolutely. This is a very good point, and it is very good question, Alexandra. So to answer your question, I can say yes, Morocco is one of the safest travel destinations in Africa, and I can say in the world as well, and it welcomes millions of visitors every year like any destination. So use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and keep an eye of your belongings in busy areas, of course. Traveling with a reputable local guide or DMC can make your experience even smoother. So that is to say, uh, so in every destination, in any country you can go, there is always this kind of safety that you have to take in, in consideration, consideration when you are traveling and including, especially when you are visiting, uh, a city. We are in the guide city tour, so you have to be aware of your surroundings and, uh, be careful of your pockets, especially when you are walking, especially in the closed area. Can you also explain a little bit more where is Morocco? Because we received a lot of questions, uh, thinking that Morocco is near, uh, Middle East. So I think it's important maybe to tell again where Morocco is and near- Yes ... Europe maybe. Do you wanna add something here? Yes. Yes, absolutely. This is, this is a, a, a confusion for most of travelers, uh, as they think Morocco is, uh, is an, a Middle East country. Absolutely not. Morocco is an African country. Actually, is, is a North African country, and it's only, uh, like 14 kilometers from Spain and Gi- Gibraltar. So it's, uh, it's totally very modern and, and, uh, very advanced country, uh, especially when w- we are talking about travel and, and tourism and so on and so forth. Um, Morocco is very safe, and it's, it's very far away from the, from the, from the Middle East. We are talking about thousands of kilometers away. Thank you for the clarification. Another question. Uh, is Morocco only desert, Sahara Desert? Oh, yes. I, I remember I, I... Many, many travelers asked me this question long time ago. Uh, especially before they come to Morocco, uh, they ask, "Is Morocco only Sahara, only a desert?" My answer is not at all. Morocco offers incredible diversity from the Atlantic to Mediterranean, beaches to the Atlas Mountains, ancient imperial cities, and lush valleys, forests, waterfalls, and of course, the Sahara Desert, which is considered a big part, a big part of Morocco, especially we are talking about the Western Sahara. Uh, so it's, the Sahara is just a part of the country, not all the country. So, uh, when we talk about the diversity, I can say that Morocco is one of the most diverse travel destinations in the world So now we know that, , Morocco is safe. Many scenic views, many different views. We can find desert, , sea, uh, mountains, , cities. So I think it's, , , a very good variety of, of things. , Before coming to like deeper questions, , about like what package, package checklist or, , what to wear, do you think Morocco is expensive? Do I need to really budget to travel to Morocco? Uh, okay. I can say, uh, I can say it's... You see, that's we- we receive many questions about, about, about this, especially can I travel to Morocco on a budget, or Morocco is expensive country, or does luxury exist in Morocco? So to answer all these questions, Morocco adapted to every budget, so you can enjoy affordable guesthouses, local, and local restaurants to indulge in the luxury yachts, body treatment, and premi- premium experiences. So overall, Morocco, Morocco offers an excellent value for money. So that is to say Morocco, it's within your budget. If you, if you look for on budget travel, this is Morocco. If you are looking for premium, for luxury travel, this is Morocco as well. If you are looking for a mid-range travel as well, this is Morocco. You choose Morocco. So Morocco, I, I can say that this is not an expensive destination. It is. If you are seeking luxury, it's an expensive destination, but you can still travel on a budget, and you can still travel in a mid-range and enjoy your, your Morocco trip. Is it easy to travel independently? Uh, people can travel independently, but from my experience in the land, on the ground especially, I highly recommend to use a DMC or a, a local tour operator to travel from Morocco. Because, um, especially in Morocco, you can, you can do it like a bucket list that you can do maybe once in a lifetime. , But I'm sure you will, you will, you will come back if you visit the country for sure because you will fall in love with it. Uh, but I, I said I, I, I highly recommend to use, , a local DMC, , travel agency or a tour operator for your, ...
