In this episode of Quills & Chills, I’m joined again by Jennifer Thorne to talk about her new novel, Newbourne Park, a dark, genuinely scary story that I absolutely loved. Jennifer describes it as “Saltburn with a supernatural twist,” and we dig into Martha, a 26-year-old caregiver who finds herself untethered after the death of her mother and agrees to spend a week at an empty Cotswolds country estate.
We talk about class, belonging, power, and the assumptions we make about opportunity and limitation, as well as what the house begins to awaken in Martha. We also get into the wonderfully terrifying Lady Lambert, the strange community Martha finds herself drawn into, some of the book’s more deliciously twisted moments, and the bigger questions Jennifer leaves us with at the end. Plus, we do a little dream casting!!
