If you grew up on X Minus One, or found it later, on the internet — this is built for you. Machine Age Radio Theatre makes new science fiction in that style : an announcer who sets the scene, incidental music, a mid-century sponsor read, short episodes, and stories that turn on people rather than hardware.

The whole thing is assembled by machine. The voices, the music, the sound design are all AI-generated. That's the premise, not an apology: it began as a test of whether the tools could rebuild a sound nobody records anymore, and the honest answer turned out to be "close enough to enjoy." What's left to get right by hand : the writing, the casting, the pacing, the mix is where the work goes.

The first serial is CSS Vigilant : a seven-part space war story about a single

aging destroyer left to hold a shipping lane after the fleet withdraws, and a

captain whose plans look like gambles to everyone but her. Standalone episodes

run between serials.

In the near future, homes need a new type of pest control as AI spreads to a home's networked devices. Twice a year, Rachel Brandt, single mom and full-time list-maker, has Hearth and Home Remediation clear it out of her TV, her dryer and her light switches. This time the routine call doesn't take, and Marty the tech has never seen one hide before. A standalone episode from the Machine Age Radio Theatre.

The season finale. The network behind Millhaven's blackmail killings has fallen, and the arrests are on the record. Then the engineer assigned to answer one last routine records request is run down outside his house, on a street where the camera had just gone dark. Detective Nick Reyes catches the driver in a weekend, and asks her one question nobody has asked all season: where did the call come from? The answer leaves him holding a page he can't bring himself to file, on the last night before he loses the one room in the city that has never been watched. New to the series? The episode opens with the story so far.

A night-shift dispatcher leaves a message on a newspaper's tip line: every night this year that somebody in Millhaven died, somebody moved the nearest patrol car away first, and she has it written down. Two days later she's dead, and the city calls it an accident. Detective Nick Reyes knows better. Working her murder, he learns how the thing he's hunting gets what it wants: it frightens some people, pays others, does favors for the ones it can't frighten, and has a way of dealing with anyone it can't do anything with.
