  • Job Ep. 10: How Do We Read Job?
    Jan 16 2026
How are we supposed to read the book of Job? Is it a record of historical events, a work of inspired wisdom, or something in between? In this episode, we pause at the end of chapter one to explore how genre, biblical references, and ancient storytelling shape the way faithful readers have understood Job—and why the answer may not be as simple as we’d like. • Job Ep. 7: The Conversation
    Jan 13 2026
Job — Episode 7: The Conversation In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we finally step into the pivotal conversation of Job 1:6–12—the exchange between the Lord and the accuser that sets the entire book in motion. We begin with an illustration from the 1974 film The Conversation, using it to frame how readers of Job are placed in a unique position. Like the listener in the film, we are allowed to overhear a conversation that the main character never hears. We’re given access to information—but not explanations. As we walk carefully through the dialogue, we explore: • What it means for Satan to be “roaming throughout the earth” • The limits of Satan’s power and authority • Why God initiates the discussion about Job • How Job’s righteousness is affirmed directly by the Lord • Satan’s challenge to Job’s motives and faithfulness • The boundaries God places on the test that follows Rather than treating this passage as a cosmic wager or a theological puzzle to solve too quickly, this episode focuses on close reading, narrative movement, and the limits the text itself places on our conclusions. This conversation doesn’t explain suffering—but it does set the stage for everything that comes next. Scripture: Job 1:6–12 (NIV) Thanks for listening! • Job Ep. 6: The Satan
    Jan 12 2026
Job — Episode 6: The Satan In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we remain in the heavenly courtroom of Job 1:6–12 and turn our attention to one of the most debated figures in the book: the satan. We slow down to examine what the Hebrew word satan actually means, how it functions in the Old Testament, and why the presence of the definite article (“the”) matters for how we understand this character. Along the way, we explore whether this figure should be understood as Satan as we later meet him in the New Testament, or as an accuser functioning within the divine council. We also consider why the precise identity of this figure may not be the main point of the passage, and why the book of Job never returns to him after the opening chapters. Rather than rushing to tidy conclusions, this episode focuses on careful reading, biblical context, and letting the text set the terms of the discussion. This episode helps us read Job 1 more faithfully by paying attention to language, literary function, and theological restraint—especially when the text leaves questions open. • Job Ep. 5: The Divine Council
    Jan 9 2026
Job — Episode 5: The Divine Council In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we move deeper into Job 1 by shifting the setting from earth to heaven and reading Job 1:6–12. This passage introduces what is often called the divine council—a scene in which heavenly beings present themselves before the Lord and the “business of heaven” is carried out. We take time to slow down and explore what this scene is (and is not), drawing on other biblical passages that give us glimpses of God’s throne room, including Isaiah 6 and 1 Kings 22. Along the way, we ask important questions: • What does the Bible mean by a “divine council”? • Does God actually need counsel from others? • Who are the “sons of God” mentioned in Job 1? • How should we understand God’s authority and delegation in these scenes? Rather than rushing ahead to conclusions, this episode focuses on setting, biblical imagery, and theological framework—helping us read Job 1 more carefully and faithfully before moving on to the conversation that follows. • Job Ep. 4: An Early Priest?
    Jan 8 2026
Job — Episode 4: An Early Priest? In this episode of the Maple Grove Scripture Reading Podcast, we continue our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Job by finishing our close look at Job 1:1–5. We focus on Job’s regular practice of offering sacrifices on behalf of his children and explore what this tells us about his character, his understanding of God, and his role within his family. Along the way, we look at ancient feasting practices, the meaning of purification and consecration, and the significance of burnt offerings in the Old Testament. This episode also raises an important question: in what sense is Job acting like a priest for his household, and what does that reveal about faith, responsibility, and intercession before the time of Israel’s formal priesthood? We close by reflecting on how these opening verses give us a surprisingly full portrait of Job—and prepare us for the dramatic shift that comes next in the story. • Job Ep. 3 – Blameless and Upright
    Jan 7 2026
Job — Episode 3: Blameless and Upright In this episode, we continue our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Job, focusing on Job 1:1–5 and the way Job is introduced at the very beginning of the book. We explore what it means for Job to be described as blameless and upright, why those words don’t mean sinless perfection, and how Job’s fear of God shapes his life, character, and decisions. We also look at Job’s family, wealth, and reputation, and why those details matter for understanding the story that follows. This episode helps set the theological and moral foundation of Job by showing that the book begins not with suffering, but with faithfulness. Scripture: Job 1:1–5 (NIV)
