What’s it really like to retire, buy property and build a villa in Bali?

In Episode 1 of Why Bali with Brennan Hill, I sit down with Andrew Watts, who has made the move to Bali and experienced the property journey firsthand.

Andrew shares his story of retiring in Bali, buying an existing villa, purchasing vacant land and now building a new villa from the ground up. We talk openly about what he’s learned along the way, the things he would do differently, and what anyone considering buying or building property in Bali should know.

We cover:

• Why Andrew chose to retire in Bali
• What living in Bali is actually like
• His experience buying a villa in Bali
• Buying vacant land
• Building a villa from the ground up
• The challenges and lessons along the way
• What he’s learned about investing in Bali property
• His advice for others considering making the move

Why Bali is about the people who chose Bali for a reason — entrepreneurs, investors, expats and everyday people building a different life on the island.

Hosted by Brennan Hill, we have real conversations about life, business, property and investing in Bali.

Has Bali changed for the better or for the worse?

Bali is experiencing enormous change. Tourism continues to grow, property development is booming, more foreigners are choosing to live and invest on the island, and areas once surrounded by rice fields are transforming rapidly.

But what does all of this look like from a local perspective?

In this episode of Why Bali?, I sit down with Tosa Sitepu, better known on social media as Mak Sambung, for an open and sometimes challenging conversation about Bali today: the good, the bad, and where the island could be heading.

We discuss the Bali property boom, rapid development, tourism, foreigners moving to the island, employment and economic opportunity, infrastructure, environmental pressures, changing communities and the importance of respecting and preserving Balinese culture.

Tosa also works with our team at Local Property Team Bali, giving him a unique perspective on everyday life in Bali and the rapidly evolving property market.

This conversation isn't about declaring development good or bad. Growth creates opportunities, but it also creates challenges. There are legitimate perspectives on both sides.

So, has Bali changed for BETTER or WORSE?

We'd love to hear your perspective.

Whether you're Balinese, Indonesian, an expat, investor, frequent visitor, or simply someone who loves Bali, join the conversation.

Why Bali? with Brennan Hill brings you real conversations about Bali property, investment, business, lifestyle, culture and the people shaping the future of the island.
