Join us as we dive deeper into the Sesquicentennial Trek of 1997. One hundred and fifty years after the pioneers first arrived in Utah, hundreds of Mormons came together to commemorate the historic occasion. The task? Reenact the actual trek of the pioneers, from Omaha to Salt Lake City, as accurately as possible. What’s allowed? Singing hymns. What’s not allowed? Eating vegetables. And a bunch of other stuff. We’ll be sharing real journal entries that reveal the trials and triumphs of the Sesquicentennial trek experience, courtesy of a lovely listener of the podcast.

We’ll also share three other trek truths from listeners who experienced hardships of their own — including lunch-stealing fake families, crossing a highway with handcarts, and being awoken by gunfire to walk five miles in the middle of the night.

| We’re finally back! Today we’re talking Trek, the pioneer cosplay camp that’s been a hit with Mormon teens since 1966. What better way to honor your ancestors than to dress up like them and recreate the hardest part of their lives? In Part 1 of our 2-part Trek series, we’ll uncover the history of Trek: when, why, and how did Trek become a tradition? We’ll assess familiar features, such as the Women’s Pull, as well as defunct Trek practices like turkey hunts, history exams, and compulsory fasting while walking 15 miles per day… Listen until the end of the episode, and you may just earn yourself a nice piece of jerky and a stale roll!

And today, we are bringing you the wackiest articles we handpicked from 1900-1909. You’ll hear about the power of a friendly handshake, doctors’ drama over digestion, and why hot cocoa is basically the same thing as cocaine. One thing this episode will not concern itself with, however, is the tragic sorrow of the Mexican emperor, during the six months which followed his Christmas visit to the old Mexican palace occupied by his countryman and friend the Prince Salm Salm.
