The Big 12 admitted that replay wrongly gave BYU its first touchdown against Arizona State, and Kenny Dillingham blamed the replay booth instead of the officials. The call was wrong, and Arizona State still had a 17-17 game after three quarters. Then Reed Harris, who came into Provo leading the Big 12 with 800 receiving yards and caught one pass for four.

Jake Fette lost his first start at No. 8 BYU, 27-20, and still made Arizona State his team. Fette led two third-quarter touchdown drives from 17-3 down and threw no interceptions on 42 attempts. Then Bear Bachmeier converted two fourth downs on BYU’s 95-yard drive, and the Arizona State defense never got its stop.

Cardae Mack ran for 70 yards in the first quarter at BYU, and then Marcus Arroyo stopped handing him the ball. Arizona State went to the air behind a line that gave up five sacks, with no quarterback runs to slow the rush. Then the Arizona State defense held BYU to 36 rushing yards in the first half, and the 17 points came off short fields.

Cardae Mack scored four touchdowns against Kansas State, and Arizona State should hand him the ball at least 25 times at No. 8 BYU. Every Mack carry keeps Bear Bachmeier and a BYU run game that averages 193.7 yards on the sideline. Then Julian Hugo, the first Arizona State freshman since Terrell Suggs with a sack in three straight games, against a BYU line that has allowed four sacks all season.

Jake Fette walked into a 17-14 hole against Kansas State, and his first drive put Arizona State ahead. If the freshman starts at No. 8 BYU, that drive matters more than his 3 of 6. Then the black Sparky helmet, which Arizona State wears for the first time in Provo, and one worry about a dark Sparky on a dark shell.

Kenny Dillingham faces the pressure of a return to Provo, openly admitting past mistakes and showing clear growth as Arizona State prepares for a challenging clash with BYU. Questions swirl around whether quarterback Jake Fette will start and how the Sun Devils can capitalize on his dual-threat versatility against a BYU defense still reeling from missed tackles and key injuries.
