Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree, emerged from the shadows of slavery in 1797 in Swartekill, Ulster County, New York. This powerful narrative, as recounted by Truth to her close friend Olive Gilbert, vividly reflects the harrowing experiences she and her family faced as they were treated as the legal property of others. These formative experiences ignited her passion for activism, leading her to become a fervent abolitionist and a champion for womens rights. Her remarkable capacity for forgiveness towards those who inflicted such suffering upon her serves as an inspiring lesson for anyone striving to overcome their own traumatic pasts. Through the collaboration of Truth and Gilbert, this narrative forms a poignant indictment against the institution of slavery. - Summary by Holly Jenson
