Missionaries and educators wrote to say the book defined things they had witnessed but never known how to articulate. Within her own family, the subject remains largely untouched, and that is something she chose in order to preserve relationships she knows are fragile.

Holly talks about how writing helped her recognize those reactions without being controlled by them, and how it allowed her to draw a clearer line between evangelical culture and the teachings of Jesus she still takes seriously.
