Cold steel met canvas: a framed, dry painting sat leaned against a convention center wall in four inches of snow while its supposed twin hung undisturbed forty feet away - an insured Arthur Cabe landscape valued at $240,000 and a forgery so fine an investigator called it in some respects more finely painted than the original. How did a crate sealed with tamper-evident tape and an unbroken exhibition chain of custody produce two identical Lowland Passages?
In this episode, we follow the discovery, the paperwork, and the people who trace the painting’s impossible double from Dellard to Cleveland to Toronto. Listen as the investigator finds an out-of-place conservation loan page in the registrar’s binder - what did that single mis-punched sheet reveal?
Person: Charles Becker
Date: April 9, 2019
Artist: Arthur Cabe
Work: Lowland Passage (1958)
Insured value: $240,000
- The painting was found at 6:20 a.m. leaning against the Harwick Convention Center exterior wall in four inches of overnight snow.
- Lowland Passage was part of a touring exhibition of forty-six American landscapes organized by the Pembrook Cultural Trust.
- The painting had traveled from Montreal to Toronto to Buffalo to Dellard and was shipped in a numbered wooden crate with tamper-evident tape applied by registrar Owen Marsh.
- Investigator Harvey Farrell received the call and arrived within two hours; he had thirty-one years with the Interstate Art Security Consortium and was sixty-two in April 2019.
- A page describing a nine-day conservation loan in February was found added later in the registrar’s binder with hole punches slightly off-axis from the other pages.
