A proposito di questo titolo

Lean by Design explores how organizations can fix what’s predictably broken in their operations — starting with the systems, decisions, and behaviors that shape how work gets done. Hosts Oscar Gonzalez and Lawrence Wong speak with leaders from biopharma and beyond, drawing lessons from industries that share the same pursuit of clarity, efficiency, and sustainable execution. Each episode breaks down real challenges into practical insights that help teams align better, think smarter, and move faster. Produced by Sigma Lab Consulting, Lean by Design helps organizations design for what works—and eliminate what doesn’t. Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

  • 0313. You Are Enough To Start Changing Broken Workflows

Work can look “fine” on the org chart and still feel painfully slow in real life. If you’re dealing with messy requirements, unclear cross-functional timelines, disconnected tools, or the same emergencies showing up every quarter, there’s a simple word for the pattern: friction. We close out season three by sharing a section from the introduction of my new book, Predictably Broken, and naming the daily drag that keeps smart teams from delivering value smoothly.

We talk about how operational dysfunction hides in plain sight through micronuisances that don’t always hurt you personally, but absolutely hurt the next step in the workflow. Project notes nobody reopens, decisions that vanish after meetings, and problems that “aren’t anyone’s role” create a perfect storm where recurring fires feel inevitable. Lean thinking and operational transformation start by seeing the system clearly, then choosing to fix causes instead of endlessly treating symptoms.

The most important takeaway is also the simplest: you are enough to start change. Whether you’re a senior leader trying to scale without breaking capacity, a manager caught in the middle, or an individual contributor new to the industry, you can be the spark. Start small, get the right stakeholders in the room, learn what’s really happening at the root, solve one problem, and move to the next.

If you want season four to go deeper on workflow improvement, cross-functional alignment, and practical process improvement, send us a message and tell us what you want to hear. Subscribe, share this with a teammate who’s tired of firefighting, and leave a review so more people can find Lean by Design.

  • 0312. How Small Process Failures Quietly Break Biopharma Teams
    Oct 6 2026

Tiny breakdowns are easy to ignore. A missed handoff here, a confusing process there, a training shortcut that “works for now.” Then one day the team feels slow, brittle, and frustrated, and everyone starts hunting for the person to blame. We take a different view: most research operations failures are predictable, and they rarely come from one catastrophic mistake.

We walk through the idea of “death by a thousand cuts” from our book Predictably Broken and what it looks like in real biopharma and life sciences teams: poor habits that become normal, misaligned incentives that reward speed over operational rigor, and a culture that celebrates scientific output while underinvesting in the unglamorous mechanics that keep work flowing. We also talk about why humans naturally build workarounds under pressure and how those workarounds hide root causes, creating compounding operational friction over time.

The takeaway is practical: the fix is not simply “more discipline.” It is redesign. When you shape the environment so the best practice is the path of least resistance, you get consistent quality, smoother research operations, and better outcomes without relying on heroics. As you listen, we challenge you to name the small cuts your team is living with right now and decide which ones you will stop burying.

If this resonates, subscribe, share the episode with a teammate, and leave a quick review so more operators and scientists can find it. What’s one “small cut” you want to eliminate this quarter?

  • 0311. Everything is On Fire And Somehow That Is Normal
    Sep 22 2026

We pull an excerpt from Oscar’s book Predictably Broken and ask the question so many biopharma teams avoid: if the work feels broken, why doesn’t anyone fix it. We argue the issue isn’t apathy or ignorance, but the real weight of diagnosing root causes, aligning stakeholders, and sustaining change in a system that normalizes constant firefighting.

We also separate symptoms from root causes, because most teams try to cure the cough while the virus keeps spreading. A handoff problem often looks like a communication gap. A nomenclature problem creates quiet chaos across functions and systems. A behavioral problem shows up when expectations for day-to-day work are fuzzy or unevenly enforced. And almost every cross-functional fix becomes a “side quest,” a real project layered onto an already packed job, which is how operational friction survives long enough to become “normal.”

If you care about biopharma operations, process improvement, change management, and reducing operational risk, this one will hit home. Subscribe, share this with a colleague who lives in firefighting mode, and leave a review with the one friction point you wish your organization would finally fix.
