• Jesus & His People | Toby Sumpter
    Oct 19 2026

This is a Psalm about the perfect man, Jesus Christ, but it is also a Psalm about what that perfect Man is determined to work into His people.

The Text: “A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart…” (Ps. 15:1-5)

  • The Foolish Heart | Toby Sumpter
    Oct 1 2026

The Bible teaches that all men naturally have a have high view of themselves (Prov. 16:2, 21:2, Ps. 36:2). This is why we need the Word of God and the Spirit of God so that we can see what we cannot naturally see.

The Text: “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good...” (Ps. 14:1-7)

Psalm 13 is a song of faithful lament and sorrow – demonstrating what faith does when the world seems to go dark.

The Text: “To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? For ever? How long wilt thou hid they face from me?” (Ps. 13:1-6).

  • God's Silver Word | Toby Sumpter

Psalm 12 is about the purity and power of God’s word in the face of wicked and destructive words. God’s Word is our salvation.

The Text: “To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men…” (Ps. 12:1-8).

  • The Foundations of the Righteous | Toby Sumpter
    Sep 16 2026

This is a Psalm of encouragement, but it comes in a context in which David’s friends were not being particularly encouraging. And so David models what faithful friendship and encouragement looks like, even when it looks like our enemies and troubles have the upper hand.

The Text: “To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, flee as a bird to your mountain?...” (Psalm 11:1-7)

  • A Storybook Ending (More or Less) | Toby Sumpter
    Sep 2 2026

So we come to the end of Judges, an era of turmoil and apostasy, but still marked by God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. And so the story ends in a sort of raw hopefulness.

We might sometimes feel like we live in a similar time of chaos and decline, but we have so much more to go on. We have thousands of years more evidence of God’s faithfulness (in the face of human sin and corruption), and we have Christ our King sitting on His throne forever. So even when foolish men seek to do what is right in their own eyes, they cannot get away from His grace.

The Text: “Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, there shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife…” (Judges 21:1-25)

  • Covenant in War | Toby Sumpter
    Aug 26 2026

This chapter continues the story of the corruption of Gibeah and the tribe of Benjamin, with judgment falling on them and on the rest of Israel. This teaches lessons about the covenant, just war, and the difference between punishment and discipline.

The Text: “Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh…” (Judges 20:1-48)
