Three Hall of Fame inductions and two special awards mark the second edition of the gala. Established in 2017, Judo Canada’s High Performance Club brings together the athletes who have competed at the Senior World Championships and/or the Olympic Games, as well as the referees, coaches, and physiotherapists who accompanied the athletes to the Olympics. The High Performance Gala is a direct offshoot of the club.

"Welcome to a special episode of Judo Canada's 'Voices from the Hall of Fame.' Today, we share the inspiring journey of Brad Farrow, a judoka whose story exemplifies dedication and perseverance.

Brad began his judo journey at the age of 11 at the Steveston Judo Club, driven by a profound love for the sport and a never-give-up mentality. His relentless pursuit of excellence led him to represent Canada in three Olympic Games and secure 11 national titles between 1974 and 1985. He achieved gold at the Pan American Games in both 1975 and 1979.

But Brad's story is about more than personal achievements. Throughout his career, he embraced an openness to learning and a deep trust in the process, qualities that propelled him forward. His experiences training and competing around the world provided profound lessons that resonate beyond the mat.

In today's episode, we'll delve into some of these defining moments and explore how they've shaped his perspectives on life and sport. We'll also discuss his commitment to giving back to the judo community, including the establishment of the Brad Farrow Bursary. For over 17 years, this initiative has provided more than $60,000 to support promising student-athletes in pursuing their judo dreams.

His story reminds us of the vital role that support and camaraderie play in the development of any judoka, and how giving back strengthens the entire community.

In line with the 100th anniversary of Judo Canada and HP Club 2024, here is another special edition interview with Tina Takahashi. She is a Canadian judoka, coach and author. She won Canada's first gold medal at the World University Games in Judo in 1984 and coached Canada's first women's Judo Olympian Sandra Greaves in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Takahashi was the first Canadian woman to achieve the rank of roku-dan (sixth-degree black belt), and the first women's Sport Canada carded athlete.

Takahashi was Canadian champion 9 times, has taught Judo for more than 30 years, and was inducted into the Judo Canada Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2008, she was named as Chair of the National Grading Board by Judo Canada.

Takahashi is the daughter of Canadian judoka Masao Takahashi and June Takahashi, and the sister of Olympians Phil Takahashi and Ray Takahashi.

In 2005, she co-authored a book titled Mastering Judo with her parents and three siblings.

Louis is a judoka from Canada, who represented his native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics: 1984 and 1988. He had unfortunately missed the 1980 Moscow Olympics due to Canada's boycott. Louis twice won the gold medal at the Pan American Games (1979 and 1983) in the middleweight division (– 86 kg). Competing as a member of Team Canada for 15 years, Louis went on to become the Technical Director for Judo Canada and eventually the National Coach. As National Coach he led the Canadian team at the 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, where Nicolas Gill won a silver medal.

Kyle Reyes (-100 kg) experienced one of the best days of his judo career at the Judo World Championships in Tashkent. The 29-year-old judoka was untouchable right through to the grand final, where he was finally bested by local hero Muzaffarbek Turoboyev. Reyes therefore departs Uzbekistan with the title of runner-up world champion.
The gold medal match ended on a somewhat controversial note. Turoboyev had already received two penalties and, according to the commentators, seemed on the verge of receiving a third for non-combativity, with about 30 seconds remaining on the clock. However, the referee did not issue a penalty on the sequence. The bout therefore went into overtime, where Turoboyev managed to throw Reyes to the ground and claim the win.

After his victories, the judoka made a ‘gator’ sign - a gesture that resonated and spread on social media. "It’s my signature technique on the ground, the 'gator'! I wrap my legs around my opponent and turn," the 29-year-old enthusiastically explained.
