We can often reduce the concept of "missions" to the sending and supporting of missionaries to various locations around the world. This is a wonderful part of being involved in missions through our churches, but we can also be guilty of transferring the responsibility of sharing the Gospel to the missionaries and pastors in our lives, rather than being personally involved. Psalm 96 begins with a declaration to "sing unto the Lord," because He is great. Then in the last half of the Psalm, and because God is worthy, is the direction to let others know of God's greatness. What is the motivation for our involvement in getting the message of the Gospel out to our friends, neighbors, and those around the world? Guilt is a terrible motivator, and will fade over time. Instead, Scripture provides a better understanding of the glory of God as a much more compelling and lasting motivation for being involved in worldwide missions. The Bible is very clear when it reveals the state of mankind apart from Christ; the outlook is completely bleak! However, even when we could do nothing to fix the problem and our eternal destination, Jesus Christ provided the only way possible for anyone to be forgiven of their sins and dwell forever with God.
