Welcome to The Gray, a place with multiple meanings in my life these days. This rest stop is one where current and retired law enforcement and first responders can kick off their boots and listen to my stories, get my take on law enforcement and the state of the world today, and give suggestions on future episodes and topics. I am a retired Kentucky State Police Master Trooper with 24 1/2 years of experience working as a road Trooper, Accident Reconstructionist, Defensive Tactics and ASP Instructor, and Dignitary Protection for two Governors. I retired with no intention of returning to police work, but a chance encounter with the sheriff in my county led me to take a School Resource Officer position in 2023 in an elementary school shortly after the Uvalde and Nashville tragedies.

I also enjoy talking about the world I grew up in as a Gen-Xer born in 1969. I grew up in the '70s and '80s, when the music and movies of those decades set the bar that has not been surpassed since. I have many stories from family vacations and holiday shenanigans that would rival National Lampoon's. I also share a perspective of growing up in the Appalachian mountains of Southeastern KY, where my Pops was a coal miner for 20 years. I even wrote a fiction book called The Last Mine that featured a character (Dale) modeled after my dad.

Pull up a chair, as I would love for everyone who needs some therapy or just a place to listen and laugh to find their way here. I am also a die-hard fan of the Steelers, Pirates, and Pens, but I love sports talk in general.

    I climbed until I reached the lone back window sill. I could barely make out the unmistakable but motionless shape on the floor.

    We cleared the dogs away from the front door and moved in, our flashlights cutting through the stale air. As we reached the end of the first wall, my partner froze. Pale as a ghost—he just mouthed it to me:

    ‘SCREAM. MASK.’

    The crazy homicide call I'll never forget, plus a little bit about me. Join my first-ever podcast and listen to a harrowing story with a humorous undertone that goes along perfectly with being a Trooper in Appalachia. This first episode is only 10 minutes long, so pull up a chair!

I'm still working on all the things the well-known podcasters do with their dedicated studios and equipment, but the content will be unfiltered and in-the-moment as I describe some of my craziest and most unforgettable calls with each episode going forward. It's therapeutic for me, and I will include some of my Appalachian upbringing and Gen-X life lessons to let you see what makes me different from all the other podcasters and YouTubers.
