Two seconds left in a regional final against Naperville and Batavia is down one. Dan Issel catches a one-handed inbound on the low post and lays it in at the buzzer. He still calls it his favorite game from high school.

In the first of three episodes Dan and coauthor Doug Brunk talk about how his memoir Dan Issel: From Kentucky Wildcat to NBA Legend came together and then we go back to Batavia, Illinois. A school of fewer than six hundred kids playing in one state bracket with everybody else. A gym for two thousand that was full every night. A coaching hire that sounds like it came out of Hoosiers and a coach who stayed after practice with a five-foot-four seventh grader nobody else noticed.

Part 2 picks up at Kentucky.

Kareem and Wilt talked about Connie Hawkins the way you'd talk about the best you ever saw. Most fans under 45 have never heard the name.

Bo Belanger is a writer with a passion for basketball. He found Connie's story in 2019, tracked down Connie's grandson Shawn a year later, and has been working to get it into the world ever since. "Connie and Jack: A Rigged Game" is the payoff, a nine-episode dual biography of Connie Hawkins, the New York playground legend blackballed at 19 over a fixing scandal he wasn't part of, and Jack Molinas, the Columbia star who ran it and kept landing on his feet. Bo calls it part podcast, part audiobook. He's right, and it's the best basketball story you've never heard.

We get into how Dave Wolf's Life Magazine piece rewrote Connie's public story, why the pressure put on a broke teenager in 1961 hasn't gone anywhere, and what it means that the NBA now shares a revenue stream with the sportsbooks.

Between 1992 and 2001, Duke went from back-to-back national champions to a program in crisis and back again. This episode of Iconic Seasons covers the nine-year drought between Duke's second and third national championships, including Coach K's battle with a career-threatening back injury, a 4-15 season, the night he drove to his athletic director's house to resign, and the rebuilding process that produced one of the most dramatic championship runs in college basketball history.

The 2000-01 Blue Devils led by Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Mike Dunleavy Jr. overcame a broken foot to their starting center, reinvented their offense overnight, pulled off the "Miracle Minute" at Maryland, erased a 22-point deficit against Maryland in the Final Four, and beat Arizona for the national title.

Featuring stories from John Feinstein's reporting and archival interviews with Coach K, Shane Battier, Jay Williams, and Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Host: Aaron Meyer
