In the debut episode of Bull City Beats, host Dwight Bell sits down with Chief Stephanie Mardis, the 17th Chief of Police for the City of Durham, to talk about the path that took her from a biology and chemistry degree at Bennett College to a nearly 25-year career in law enforcement, and what she sees as her first priorities in Durham: reducing violent gun crime, building lasting trust with the community, and supporting the men and women of the department who carry out that mission. This episode also focuses on those men and women who’ve decided to join the force as we hear from several new officers who recently graduated from Academy 62. Lt. Jermaine Clark welcomes Officers Cameron and Buchanan to the studio to discuss why they chose this profession, why they chose Durham, and the calls that have shaped their first weeks on the street.
