Daily Bible Reading: Matthew 21, read in full from the World English Bible (WEB).
Matthew 21 opens with the King of Zion coming to Jerusalem, humble and riding on a donkey, exactly as the prophet said. The crowds spread their cloaks and cry Hosanna to the son of David, and Jesus goes straight to the temple, drives out the buyers and sellers, and says that His house shall be called a house of prayer. The blind and the lame come to Him there and are healed, and the children go on praising Him while the chief priests grumble. The fig tree with only leaves warns us that a show of religion is not the fruit God wants, and Jesus tells His disciples that whatever they ask in prayer, believing, they will receive. Then He answers the question of His authority with parables: the son who said no and went, the son who said yes and did not, and the farmers who killed the vineyard owner's son. The stone the builders rejected has become the head of the corner, and it is the LORD's doing, marvellous in our eyes.
