Have you ever noticed what happens when you hear a song you love?
Maybe you instantly feel happier.
Maybe a song takes you back to a particular person or season of your life.
Maybe worship music calms you down.
Maybe the sound of rain helps you sleep.
Maybe you've even noticed that when you're stressed, you naturally want quiet.
Sound affects us.
There is no question about that.
But lately I've been seeing some pretty incredible claims about the healing power of sound.
I've read that a particular Mozart or Beethoven composition can help people with cancer.
I've read that certain frequencies can change the way our bodies process stress.
I've read that singing and humming stimulate the vagus nerve.
I've read stories about monks being placed in chapels because the humming or chanting was supposedly healing.
I've read about placing tuning forks directly on your body.
And then there are sound baths and singing bowls.
So I started wondering:
What is actually true?
Is there really a healing frequency?
Should we all be listening to a particular symphony?
Does humming really do something to our nervous system?
And if sound really can help us, how can an ordinary woman actually use it in her everyday life?
Let's separate what we know from what we wish were true.
