Who was Khamûl? Of the Nine Ringwraiths, he is the only one Tolkien ever named, and this deep dive traces that name to Unfinished Tales and the late notes of "The Hunt for the Ring," where he is the Shadow of the East, the Black Easterling, and the Second Chief beneath the Witch-king of Angmar.Khamul was one of six Ring-bearers who were not Númenórean, probably a man of Rhûn. From 2951 of the Third Age he held Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. In September 3018 he rode into the Shire, questioned Gaffer Gamgee, and hunted Frodo to the Bucklebury Ferry, keenest of the Nazgul at sensing the Ring, yet half-blind by day. Where he came from, and whether he led the Nine after the Pelennor Fields, Tolkien never settled.🕐 CHAPTERS:0:00 Khamûl: The Only Nazgûl Tolkien Named1:12 Where Khamûl's Name Comes From in Unfinished Tales5:10 Nine Rings for Mortal Men: Three Númenóreans and Six Others9:51 Black Easterling or Shadow of the East?13:38 Dol Guldur After 2951: A Nazgûl in Mirkwood18:34 The Black Rider at Bag End: September 23, 301823:01 Why Khamûl Could Sense the Ring But Not See in the Sun27:05 The Second Chief After the Witch-king Fell#lotr #tolkien #ringsofpower #tolkienlore #tolkienexplained📖 Read more: https://rangeroftherealms.com/episodes/khamul-the-easterling-the-only-nazgul-tolkien-named/How this episode was made: researched from the primary texts, drafted with AI from my notes and reviewed and edited by me, fact-checked against the books, illustrated with generated art under my direction, narrated in a clone of my own voice.
