Welcome to The Immersive Lens - the show where emerging tech meets creativity, education, and real-world impact. Hosted by Paul Engin (Professor of New Media) and Dave Ghidiu (Professor of Computer Science) at Finger Lakes Community College, this podcast dives into the technologies and creative innovations reshaping how we live, work, and learn - from AI and augmented reality to the future of media, design, and learning.

In this episode of The Immersive Lens, Paul, Dave, and Jeff talk about things you don't need to buy (yet).

The push for edge computing and localized artificial intelligence is accelerating rapidly, but hardware manufacturers might be overestimating consumer demand. This week, the central focus is on Nvidia's staggering new RTX Spark laptops, which boast up to 128GB of RAM specifically designed to run local Large Language Models.

Paul, Dave, and Jeff break down the practicality of these high-end machines. The conversation then shifts to home automation, analyzing Apple's rumored "Home View" wall hub and its potential to replace the dedicated house iPad. Finally, Dave gives his hands-on verdict of the newly released Google Book, sharing why Google's promise of a new form of computer hasn't been fulfilled. Frustrating file management, jagged connection issues with other devices, and lack of fluid user switching make it a tough sell as a daily production driver. Does Jeff convince Dave not to return it?
