“Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is."

So wrote Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. As was Adams' style, it perfectly understates the incomprehensible size of our universe. Yet, that doesn't stop us from imagining it. Or exploring it. What is out there? Or, perhaps, more succulently, what is there.

The AstRowe Education Podcast is dedicated to providing education to the public, one episode at a time. Education doesn't end when we leave the school yard or complete our formal studies, and educators aren't just found in classrooms.

AstRowe Education is a North Carolina-based nonprofit* dedicated to providing educational outreach to communities, both locally and galactic. Yes, the name is a Dad Joke, a portmanteau homage to this podcast's creator's lifelong fascination with the heavens. However, the mission is absolutely serious and The AstRowe Education Podcast is one means of providing this outreach.

So join us on this journey to exploring this vast infinity, one episode at a time, Just make sure your hands and feet are inside the ride, your seat belt is buckled and your suit is pressurized as we take you on this cosmic ride.

    Guests: Emily Rieder, Don Smith

Emily Rieder is a theatre studies lecturer at Guilford College; Don Smith is a physics and astronomy professor. Together they are teaming up for a truly unique production in November..

"Silent Sky" is a Lauren Gunderson play that explores the life of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868–1921), While working as a "computer" at the Harvard College Observatory, she analyzed photographic plates of variable stars without ever using a telescope; Leavitt discovered the luminosiity-period relationship in Cepheid variables, massive stars, with short lifetimes, coining the term standard candles. Her method is now part of the cosmic distance ladder, a compendium of methods now used to measure cosmic distances.

The production is being staged in the campus planetarium, believed to be a unique first for this play. Rieder and Smith discuss the life of Leavitt, the inspiration of the play and the challenges of this production.
