Gymnastics, dance, and figure skating ask the body to do beautiful, impossible things - and rarely talk about what that costs. The MedGym Podcast is where that conversation finally happens. Hosted by physical therapist Gina Pongetti Angeletti, it's an honest look at health in the sport: the mental, the physical, and the training that ties them together.

Every other Thursday, Gina sits down with the athletes, clinicians, and coaches who actually live it - for real talk about injury and comeback, fear and confidence, fueling, burnout, longevity, and what it takes to stay whole in a sport built on perfection. No spin, no highlight reel. Just the stuff nobody explains until you need it.

  • What's Under the Chalk: Jan Stechmann and Jeanette Wörner of SPIETH
    Oct 15 2026

Every gymnast at Worlds lands on the same mats, swings on the same bars and punches off the same boards. Jan Stechmann and Jeanette Wörner of SPIETH, the company that built them, spend the hour on what nobody watching at home thinks about.

SPIETH has been building gymnastics equipment since the 1950s. It made the tension springboard that debuted at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, has supplied twelve Olympic Games, and is the apparatus supplier for the 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam. Jan Stechmann is managing director of SPIETH America and runs the company's business across Germany, Canada and the US. Jeanette Wörner is head of sales and marketing at SPIETH Gymnastics in Germany.

Gina recorded this two days before Rotterdam opens, as the trucks were arriving. It is a physical therapist's tour of the equipment: what "bouncy" actually means to a body, why foam wears out where everyone lands, how a floor is built so it never comes apart under a triple full, and what a gym can check tomorrow.

    In this episode:

    • Fifteen to twenty trucks, two podia and seven sets of equipment: what it takes to load in a World Championships
    • Why nobody at Worlds competes on brand-new equipment, and who breaks it in first
    • What "bouncy" means as ground reaction force, and why 78% back versus 85% throws off a landing
    • How a new springboard gets dropped on a thousand times before an athlete ever touches it
    • The question every gym owner asks a supplier, "how long does it last?", and Jan's answer: what are you doing with it?
    • When did you last lift the carpet? The safety check most gyms never do
    • Vorspannung, the German idea that the equipment works with the gymnast, not against her
    • Inside a competition floor, from the concrete up: a sandwich, and a puzzle
    • Cable tension on bars and rings, measured instead of guessed by whichever coach set the bar
    • Why the podium feels different, and why the first few rounds of podium training are about over-rotation
    • The skill Jeanette still holds her breath for

Jan Stechmann and Jeanette Wörner are with SPIETH Gymnastics, the apparatus supplier for the 2026 World Championships in Rotterdam and the equipment supplier for the LA 2028 Olympics.

  • Knowing What to Ignore: Dr. Brian Cole, Sports Medicine Surgeon
    Sep 17 2026

Dr. Brian Cole operates on professional athletes for a living. Four out of five people who walk into his office will never be operated on at all.

He is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, a professor at Rush University Medical Center, and team physician for the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago White Sox and the Joffrey Ballet. He has published more than a thousand articles, he has spent twenty five years building the evidence base for cartilage restoration, and in 2025 he won one of the biggest research awards in orthopedics for his work on joint preservation.

He also trademarked the phrase "spare the scalpel," which is an unusual thing for a surgeon to build a practice around.

Gina and Dr. Cole have worked together for more than twenty years, and this is a conversation between two people who send each other patients. It is less an interview than an argument they both already agree on: that the hardest part of this work is never the operation, and that most of what shows up on a scan was never the problem.

    In this episode:

    • Why no more than twenty percent of the people in his office will ever have surgery, and what the other eighty percent get instead
    • The first question he asks a patient, which is not where it hurts
    • Why he says nobody has ever felt better or been cured by an MRI, and what a two page scan report actually tells you
    • The seven million people over sixty five walking around with a rotator cuff tear they will never know about
    • What actually predicts whether physical therapy works, which is not the size of the tear
    • Why ACLs almost never tear in the first quarter, and what film of NFL knees showed when they went looking for different mechanisms
    • What PRP and stem cell injections really do, from the surgeon who chairs the board that governs their ethical use
    • Gina on baseline testing, and why the only jump height that matters is the one you had before
    • A Volkswagen body with a Ferrari engine, and the fourteen year old brains making adult decisions
    • Why he thinks of himself as a waiter, and what he wants you to do before your next appointment

Dr. Brian Cole practices at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago.
