The Thermometer Pushed Through the Floor-and Broke Seventy Years of Silence
In this episode, we follow the discovery at dawn of a perfectly upright mercury thermometer embedded in the floor of a long-locked assay office in Coldstrike, Nevada, and the sequence of field responses that turn a prank theory into a deeper mystery. What did the object's model date and the building's untouched abandonment reveal about who - or what - had been there?
Person: Dale Stewart
Date: February 4, 2011
Location: Coldstrike, Nevada
Building: Harmon-Vetch assay office
Inspector: Deputy Mara Osgood
- A sixteen-year-old paperboy, cutting through the old assay office at 6:20 a.m., nearly steps on a mercury thermometer with its bulb four inches into the hardwood floor.
- The assay office had been locked and officially unoccupied since circa 1941, with intact dust layers, unbroken cobwebs, and decades-set furnace ash.
- Deputy Osgood photographs the scene from six angles, notes absence of tool marks or grain disruption, and logs “Floor inconsistent with insertion by hand tool or physical force.”
- The thermometer’s manufacturer's label shows a model discontinued in 1958-seventeen years newer than the last documented use of the building.
- Retired mineralogist Ross Larsen arrives with a bore-scope and thermal sensors, probes three feet west of the insertion point, and finds ordinary subfloor material on the first pass.
