Scientific Reality Podcast is a biweekly show asking an old question anew: is science the product of society, or should society be the product of science? Hosted by Drs Fred Gregory, Jason Metcalfe, and Wim JC Melis, two scientists and an engineer, the show goes beyond typical science dialogue. We talk to science professionals about the state of their field and where it's heading; and we push further: who funds the work, why, and has the system drifted? We're as interested in the quiet science as the outcomes that capture headlines. Almost nothing is off-limits, as long as science has a say!Scientific Reality Podcast Scienza

  • [SRPEP001] Scientific Reality Podcast // Episode 001 // What is Scientific Reality Podcast?
    Oct 1 2026
In our first official episode, the co-hosts introduce Scientific Reality Podcast—and begin by asking what the two words at the center of its name actually mean. What do we mean when we call something scientific? Is science primarily a body of established knowledge, or is it better understood as a structured pursuit of knowledge driven by curiosity and inquiry? And because science is ultimately conducted by people, can it ever be fully separated from human judgment, culture, institutions, incentives, assumptions, and bias? From there, the conversation turns to an even more difficult question: what do we mean by reality? We explore the relationship between observation and objectivity, science as one among several ways of knowing, Western influences on contemporary scientific practice, and what areas such as quantum physics reveal about the limits of simple or absolute accounts of reality. We also consider how perception, society, culture, and shared human experience shape the realities through which we understand and navigate the world.Along the way, the discussion ranges from scientific objectivity and epistemology to color perception, quantum reality, institutional science, and the distinction between discovering the world and interpreting it.Finally, we explain what we intend Scientific Reality Podcast to become: an open and informal space for scientists, researchers, educators, practitioners, and other thoughtful people to explore difficult questions in greater depth than conventional interviews or public discussions often allow. Some episodes will feature conversations among the hosts; others will bring in guests and outside expertise. The aim is not necessarily to arrive at tidy answers, but to examine assumptions, follow interesting questions wherever they lead, and better understand both science and the human beings who practice it.Scientific Reality Podcast (SRP) is hosted by Frederick Gregory, Wim JC Melis, and Jason S. Metcalfe—scientists, educators, and leaders with experience across different parts of the science and innovation ecosystem.Content disclaimer: For educational and entertainment purposes only.
